That I can't tell you. But honestly, I think I like the "tradition" of the players coming over to sing the Alma Mater and Ay Zig after the game better than a band postgame on the field. I feel that it's more celebratory and more people get to be involved. Didn't they do that after every game when we first started doing it? I distinctly remember having to play Ay Zig when the players looked as though they clearly would rather be anywhere else in the world. Someone told me that now the players only come over and sing after a win?

Well, they haven't stuck around after the last two games.

But playing Ay-Zig after a loss? I seem to remember, my freshman year, being told that we play Forward Falcons, Ay-Zig, Alma Mater, and Beer Barrel after a win, but only FF, the AM, and BB after a loss. Not that the band had to experience the latter in 2002.

In any case, I can hardly blame the players for wanting to get off the field as soon as possible these past two weeks. But it does make it kind of (even more) depressing. I love this new tradition, too, and wish we were playing for 'em even after a loss... to show them we still support them no matter what.

I think the band should play the Alma Mater no matter what the outcome of the game. I think the fact that the team didn't stay out after the game shows how deflated this team actually is.

That's what it looked like to me, too. They weren't looking at or talking to each other, they just had their heads down, and they got off the field fast with no dawdling and hanging around. "Deflated" is exactly the word for it.

That sight made me much sadder than the scoreboard did.

in 1999 we played a post game show after every game. we did the forward by fives. rrrrr. i don't know when that was stopped.
that year, we also heard "go get 'em fealcons" at the end of every buffo poem.
the alma mater with the team is a newer tradition. urban demanded that the team stay out after the game, win, lose, or draw, assemble before the band, and sing the alma mater. i remember that duringhis tour of campus organizations upon being named coach, then when he came and spoke to the group to try ahd drum up support for the team, he mentioned that he wanted the team to sing the alma mater with the student body, no matter the outcome of the game. they did.
he also told us to tear down the goalposts after we beat toledo. we did.

*edit* i knew if i looked for the article, i'd find it. from the bg news, 8 feb 01...
"The coach plans to hold the new tradition on the football field. After every home game no matter if they win or lose, Meyer said he will have his players go over to the student section and salute the student body by holding up their helmets and singing the Falcon fight song. Hopefully for Falcon fans, those arms will be raised in victory"

My first year was 2000. Why should you know that? It's not exactly important trivia!

It's possible that we didn't play Ay Zig after a loss, but I know it was at least the Alma Mater and Forward Falcons. I honestly don't think there was a set play list, it was just whatever the director called at the time.

I think it's terrible that the team just left the field after the game. I really admired that Urban had them come over and sing no matter what- the Alma Mater is so important and it seems that everyone just ignores it. I understand that it's depressing to lose, but even when you do, you're still a Falcon and singing with the students is a way to show that you appreciate their support. That's something Urban seemed to really understand and I'm sad to see that Brandon isn't keeping it up.

It was just something I thought I knew (or did at one point in time).

I could be wrong, but this is what I seem to remember starting in '01:

FFF: end of game
Alma Mater: Win, Lose, or Draw
AZZ: After a win as the team has a Pit Mosh

Normally at this point Dr. Toney would play at least something from halftime, if not the entire show, from the stands. For some reason I remember doing this regularly through the '03 season. Don't recall doing it in '04. I could be wrong on that part.

Beer Barrel: duh
March Out: once agian, duh.

As ya'll know, I am often wrong, so feel free to correct.

That is correct. I really doubt the team ever wants to stick around after a loss though. None of them even know the words like Meyer told Dr. Toney he would make them learn. It was all just a BS get attention and make me look better thing for UM.

Just because the players don't sing the words doesn't mean that they don't know them. Also, Urban did plenty to make himself look good during his time here, he didn't need to start that tradition to do that.
Sorry to keep harping on it, but I really love that tradition. I love it even more now that I'm an alum.
