You bring up a good point Dayon, the Cameron Crazies are an organized group and have leaders. I'd like to see an organized group (much like the Animals) for the Ice Arena. If I had the money to start it I'd be glad to help head it.
If you want to seriously cut down on the obscenities you need to take your complaints to those who have the power to stop it.
Ever tried telling hundreds of students to stop doing something?

Not that it really matters in this situation, but Red Berenson actually pleaded with the students at Yost last year to clean up their language.BGDrew wrote:You bring up a good point Dayon, the Cameron Crazies are an organized group and have leaders. I stand by the zamboni doors and can barely hear section E. What ever happened to the cross-ice "BG-SU"? Or, "Hey ref, you're terrible, and ugly, and terrible, and ugly, and terribly ugly"? Ah, the good old days when you could actually understand what was being said and the worst language you heard was "Go green, go white, go suck an egg! (for MSU)" or the occasional "Bullsh!t, bullsh!t" when it was appropriate. "Hey bus driver, warm up the bus, warm up the bus, warm up the bus......(with keys jiggling in the air)" and the "Goodbye" song during the closing minutes of a win are all traditions that have since left the ice arena. In the 90's, section E was only half as full as it is now because the rest of the students went to section A. Talk about loud all over the arena.

Tradition is something that is passed down from generation to generation.BGDrew wrote:It's not really an isue, I'd say it's more of tradition.
The use of foull and vulgar language at the Ice Arena - This is not tradition, this is trash.
We did not pass down the use of foul language to those that followed us to the hockey games. You guys need to clean up your act.

The thing about tradition is, as you said, that it is passed down. My problem with the nature of this "debate" is and has been that a lot of people from Section A (not all, mind you), just point fingers at the current student section without doing anything ot inform them of what the rich traditions we have lost were. I would submit that this is a lack of leadership on the part of the "old-timers" (and I don't mean that in a bad way!transfer2BGSU wrote:Tradition is something that is passed down from generation to generation.BGDrew wrote:It's not really an isue, I'd say it's more of tradition.

The fact of the matter is that when I hear things like "the student section is a disgrace!" I shut down and don't want to listen to that person anymore. Those of you that speak in such an accusitory manner need to realize that you are, in part, complicit in the degredation of our hockey traditions. You have not done your part in passing them down, and pissing in students cheerios about it now isn't getting anyone anywhere. I am all for getting rid of the profanity at hockey games (although I will go to my grave saying that the word "suck" is no longer profaine), but everyone needs to take a step back and realize that everyone is perpetuating the current situation.

That's called "planting the seed". Apparantly it didn't germinate and take root. We've tried to change this many times in the past in many different ways. To section E we're just the old timers and we "don't get it". The change has to start from within section E with someone who will take our advice, take the lead, and try to change it.Bleeding Orange wrote: Quite frankly, the only person who has ever taken the time to do this with me, personall, is Falcon Fanatic, and I appreciated every word of advice she ever gave me. FWIW there's is more than just the words "sucks" and "ass" coming from section E. When the opposing team walks by the vulgarity that gets spewed is, quite frankly, embarassing. Ask the parents of the players who sit near there and have to endure it what they think.
As far as finger pointing is concerned, it's all coming from secton "E". Where else are we to point?

I agree that there has to be some leadership from within, and I wish I could have been around long enough to see that through, but you and your lovely bride are certainly not the people I am talking about here.
I also wasn't making that statement to be brash, I was simply trying to make a point. For all of the talk about how our traditions have been forgotten, people have to realize that what exists in section E today, for current students, is tradition. It is all they have ever known. I don't think there is anything wrong with people going and sitting in section E, even if they are not students, to help police things, especially along the railing. There are already a lot of non-students who sit in the front of section E, so I don't think anyone would have a problem with a few more in there, especially once they start catching on to the example.
Also, the Anderson Animals have proven that a small group of determined people can in fact change the behavior of a large crowd. This is why I really wanted to start an organization like that for the Ice Arena, but alas the idea was not born until very late in the season, and then I graduated and woke up surrounded by cacti.

I know I've read about this being done in the late 80's (I think), and I believe they do it at UM basketball and hockey, but a "newsletter" handout either before each game, or before a big game could be fun. It's something you could research and type up, if you had a partner in BG that could secure funds (donation-wise, or sneaking to the office copier) they could distribute it. Even starting as a "this is how they used to chant without obscenities" or ideas for chants directed at upcoming opponents.Bleeding Orange wrote:If there is any way any of you think I may be able to help, PM me and let me know. I'm willing to do what I can, even from a few thousand miles away.
For some reason, this just came to mind, if Section A could fill up as full as I saw Section E last week for the "Now with 67% less hockey!" Game, they could have some fun yelling back and forth (of course using the borderline swear "sucks"...)
E: "HEY SECTION A!!!!"
A: "WHAT?"
E: "SHEGOS SUCKS! SHEGOS SUCKS! SHEGOS SUCKS!"
A: "YES WE KNOW! YES, WE KNOW! YES, WE KNOW!"
God, sometimes I'm too creative for my own shorts.

Wow, that just doesn't sound quite right...
If I can find access to a scanner, I might be able to post one of his old "E Ticket" newsletters. About printing them: I don't remember how BGSU is, but my school doesn't have any restrictions on printing in the computer labs. Might raise a few eyebrows if a couple thousand copies are printed off, but if 10 or so people can be organized it's possible to do it for free.

I work for a group on campus with access to a scanner, it's just the copies that would get expensive.

I just wanted to post them as an example. I found an old thread I started on this very subject awhile back and he said he had most of them still on disk.BGDrew wrote:I work for a group on campus with access to a scanner, it's just the copies that would get expensive.
