Why are recruiting so many skilled players?

Post by BG WARRIOR »

I was looking at some of the recruits that we are going after and it seems that all we are going after is skilled postion players! We by all accounts need to be loking at some OL and DL players!! Looking at what happen to us in Dekalb last friday night,we need all the help and good players we can get at these postions. We have alot of good players at the skilled postions, but if they have no holes to run through or time to throw they are very average!! I think our coaching staff is so fixaded on all the skilled players in the recruiting process and not spending the time getting the "BELL COWS" that really make the difference in a good season (7-4) or a great season (10-1). I love that we all expect to be in the hunt every year now,but it has to be a TEAM effort and the recruiting process is the life line to having that expectation to win the MACC every year!...GO BG!!

Because all of the "unskilled" players are attending UT.

We need to replace a LOT of the skilled poitions in the next two years. We have a lot of depth at the OL position right now, and are in a position to "pick and choose" other positions. We need a ton of receivers next year.

Speaking of players, anyone notice:

2 freshmen started on the OL
Freshman Brandon Curtis started at DE (unless that's a mistake)
Freshmen Waldron and Winovich are playing. Winovich is returning KO
Dispite all the dropped passes, Omar was 29 of 42.

Anyway, I think we could use a few recruits everywhere but LB looks like a glaring future need. A few speedy or sure handed receivers would be good but we do have a lot at that position. I wish we would work Lett into a few screen plays now and then, or streak him down the sideline.

I rest at ease with regard to depth of talent at this point. You look at who is producing what with our team, and you have to be happy. If all is as it should be, we can expect to see bright young talent doing more sooner than we have come to expect during the Urban renewal, or Brandon's time. We are beyond the point of trying to just win, with thin talent, and no record of doing so. Kids WANT to play here. When you don't have to convince players of the virtue of a "rebuilding" mission, it helps a lot of things. Its another reason to make sure DLP Stadium is full, even having been knocked around this past week.

There was a lot of discussion here during the recruiting season that we were NOT chasing any WRs. Makes sense that we would go after them hard this time around.

As someone else noted, if we're not going to RS Winovich this year, I sure hope he does more than play special teams before the season is over.

OL starters -- Lichtensteiger has started all year and Nystrom replaced Rob Warren who was hurt.

I don't think Curtis started, but I could be wrong.

Winovich is on the kick return and kick coverage teams. He actually returned one that was along the ground against NIU. I don't remember seeing Waldron.

Come on now, you can never have to many skill players. Speed and athleticism cannot be coached. When I say skill players though, I include defensive backs and linebackers. Again, cannot have to many athletes on defense either.

That is the understatement of the season!
