Closed Scrimmages

Post by cowboyjoe »

I heard from a couple of good sources that we played even with Duquesne and then got beat up pretty bad against Wright State. Not sure how those two teams are supposed to be this year, but that's what I heard. Any one else hear anything?

Uh....yuck, we got beat up by Wright St? Thats not good. Still think we're going 20-9 this year Metzger? :coo-coo: Honostly I'll take us being at least 500. this year and it'll be a struggle to get to that I think.

Was your source Maureen or Dan himself?

ON THE EVE: The BGSU men's basketball team starts its season Thursday, playing in the NABC Classic, a tournament in Blacksburg, Va. The Falcons will play Western Carolina, Virginia Tech and Radford without their leading returning scorer, guard Steven Wright. They will also be without freshman Dusan Radivojevic.

Wright (broken foot) and Radivojevic (leg fracture) are recovering from injuries. Wright could return for the team's home opener against Urbana on Nov. 19, and Radivojevic in time for its next game against Oakland on Nov. 30.

Coach Dan Dakich said yesterday he was pleased with the team's first closed scrimmage two weeks ago against Duquesne, but that the Falcons took a step back in a scrimmage against Wright State over the weekend.

"We have a long way to go before we're nearly as good as we can be," Dakich said.

The starting five in scrimmages has been center Matt Lefeld, forward Mawel Soler, guards Perrick Robinson and John Floyd and either Martin Samarco or Darryl Clements at another guard position. Dakich said turnovers and fouling are two areas that need much improvement quickly.

"Those are two areas we can't afford," Dakich said. "We're a bit of a short bench right now. With playing three games in four days you're going to have to play a lot of guys, and you can't just continuously get guys in foul trouble."

I think Wright St. beat us in a scrimmage last year and the season wasn't a total disaster. I think Wright St. had a decent season a year ago. Also not having two of our better players in the scrimmage doesn't help.

Heck it was only a scrimmage anyways. You take them seriously but you don't rely on them to tell you how your entire season is going to be. They are a chance to see what you are doing right at the moment and what still needs to be straightened out.

You could beat the best team in the nation in a scrimmage and that doesn't give you any points if you can't win during the regular season.

But I guess it's just easier to be pesemistic about everything.

Great, we are still a foul-a-ton team again. Uh...I think that lineup that was stated in the above post is not going to give us a very good chance agianst some of these bigger athletic teams. We need a bigger 3 guard lineup if thats what we're going to this year. Robinson is not a 2 guard, and Samarco a 6'2 small foward? A 3 guard lineup can be nice if you got 3 taller athletic types in the 6'3 and taller range to offset the fact you have no center and power foward reserves.

I am rather surprised to see both Floyd and Moon in the starting line-up. Both are PGs and mediocre at best. If we have to start one of them at the 2 guard, we are in some serious trouble. :(

If the past couple years are any indication I think this will hold true so long as Dan is the coach here. He refuses to use any type of zone defense and forces his players to play Man. No big deal, lots of coaches do. Unfortunately he's also not been recruiting the type of athletes that are needed to play man defense against quality opponents.

The past couple years our biggest problem has been that we're inferior athletically to almost every team we play, and yet we ask our guys to try and play man defense. They're not good enough to do so, which forces others to come help on defense. Our helpers seem to have a penchant for then fouling the guy who was getting the penetration.

Dan needs to learn to be more flexible and play some zone occasionally, or get better athletes here (and get them to STAY) if we're going to decrease our fouls.

Great post. Looking back at the stats from Keith/BP/Lenny/Cowboy's senior year, even then we significantly (755 to 680) outfouled our opponents. That was in a year when we were very good and athletic and teams had to foul us at the end of games. Playing man-to-man all of the time has been one of the only complaints I have about Coach Dakich. We have key guys that get into foul trouble, then we expect them to go out and guard tightly without picking up more fouls. It is going to be imperative for Steven Wright specifically to stay out of foul trouble this year for us to have success.

Yeah. Also, it will imperative for Sullivan, Marcshall, and Lefeld to stay out of foul trouble as well, but for different reasons... We're soooo shallow up front it makes my blood run cold.

Often, we would have the following guys on the floor at the same time last year: Almanson, Eyink, Reimold, and Floyd. Now, I submit that those 4 + Speedy Gonzalez would constitute as slow of a team as there is in D1. While those guys compensated for their speed with smarts and skill, they had no business playing a zone.
