Cliches we use too much

I know that there have to be some others who, like me, are getting frustrated with the tired cliches that are being thrown around here more and more, so I figured that a thread to get them all out on the table couldn't hurt.

I'll go first - I'm sick and tired of hearing people say that they are not impressed with our performance against Kent (or any other "bottom-feeder" we have played). The fact of the matter is that there are just as many kids on the opposing sideline who are there to try and win a game no matter who that team is. People keep saying "our defense played with intensity, but that won't be enough to beat Miami!" Who the heck knows what it will take to beat Miami? No one. We have ideas, but no one knows anything for sure, yet we all try to act like we do when we make unqualified statements like this. Everytime I read these statements I just want to curse repeatedly and tell people to shut up (but I don't because that would be bad). Just give credit where credit is due. If you ask any of the coaches on our staff, I'm sure they would tell you that intensity levels are not predicated by the opponent in conference play. The Defense played their arses off - just be grateful!

Don't know if that makes any sense (porque tengo sueno), but carry on if it does!

I don't like the overuse of the term "literally". As in "Our guys literally played their rear ends off."

Really? Be sure to tell the grounds crew to look out for all the rear ends on the field.

Might not exactly be a cliche, but I'll post it anyway.

I hate "they played over their heads" ....How would you actually play over your own head? You'd be upside down, I guess. I think Omar would be far easier to defend if he was passing the ball while standing on his head.

I think we'll see next Tuesday night that we don't "suck ass". It is my opinion that if Omar Jacobs had not been injured that we would be 6-0 in the MAC right now. It may have been a struggling/grind it out 6-0, but 6-0 nonetheless. We haven't played up to our potential YET, but to say that we "suck ass" is a little harsh. I am still confident in this team's ability and I still believe that we will be the MAC champs when it is all said and done.

I think you are right Bleeding. Football is rampant with cliches. In fact, when we were watching Monday Night Football last night, my husband pointed out that they ought to quit doing half time coaches interviews because they are just plain stupid. The coach who is losing says something like "we need to quit turning over the ball" and the coach who is winning says something like "we just need to go out there & play tough for the next 30 minutes." While these cliches may sometimes be true, they are just a complete time waster.

Like you said, all the cliches are stupid, because everybody is playing to win, and you never know what is going to happen until you play the game. So I am impressed with your astute observation. Of course, I like your drunk ramblings & tirades too, so don't stop with those!

If 100% is considered maximum effort, then how is it that so many people are able to go out and give 110%? If you are able to so easily exceed maximum effort, then why stop at 110%? For the remainder of the day at work I am staying off the Internet, because I intend to give 184.739% effort to get the job done.

You misunderstand the sole purpose of the halftime coaches' interviews -- namely to provide the producer an opportunity to show the sideline babe du jour. The last football sideline interview of any kind that was interesting was Suzy Kolber talking to Joe Namath last fall.

The same idiocy now infects college basketball, and I've noticed that Coach K won't even do 'em any more. He makes Dawkins or Wojo talk to the sideline reporter while he heads back to the locker room to get started on the halftime talk.

Yeah, but are those sideline chicks really THAT babealicious? I'm not a guy, but I don't think my husband has ever found them to be that overly attractive. In fact, quite the opposite. He could care less what any chick reporter has to say about sports, period.

Way to go the extra yard BO. Really, BG should just play Falcon football. We have to stick to our game plan and stop the big play on defense. I mean if we can open up the passing lanes, dominate the line of scrimmage and take care of the football, then we should be able to bring home a victory. We don't want to milk the clock all game, but instead air it out, while pounding it on the ground. Just go out an execute and make plays on both sides of the ball, and the rest will take care of itself. It all comes down to which team wants to win it more.
