Report from Virginia Tech/Blacksburg about BG

Post by BGSU33 »

I talked to a few guys I know at Virginia Tech who worked the game last…I’ve know them for years while I was working at Virginia up until this fall. I also know the reporter who wrote the story for the Toledo Blade, he is also a UVa grad. Anyway, I called today to get the scoop from them about the game out of my own curiosity.

Basically, they all pretty much said BG looked mechanical, confused and a step slower than Western Carolina right out of the gate. They said WCU came out much more aggressive on offense to start the game, and that BG looked lost trying to run and set up things on its offensive sets. They said we looked “mechanical” trying to run our sets, while WCU just seemed to go out there and “play.” I gathered their comments were in reference to our motion offense. Anyway, they also said it was obvious BG was getting called for more fouls during the game, but that many of them were because we seemed to lack the speed to make stops and were grabbing and bumping instead of getting into position to make stops. They said our coach complaind way too much and that instead of complaining so much at the refs, maybe he should have had his team make some adjustments to stop WCU (their words not mine). They also said it was basically an ugly game, that both teams looked relatively bad despite the fact it was a season-opener. They also said WCU had a short guard about 5-11 or 6-0 who torched us in the first half and he almost outscored our team, as BG had 18 points and he had 15 at halftime.

On the other hand, they also said we easily could have packed it in when we got down by a lot but we fought back. They also said that once we started that run, we started “playing” more on offense rather than “running around looking for the perfect shot.” They said they never felt we were going to win, but if we didn’t dig such a big hole, our comeback would have resulted in a win because we really got after WCU on both ends down the stretch. But they also said WCU seemed to let up when they got up by so much thinking the game was in hand. They also felt if we played that way against Virginia Tech we’d get crushed and that we could be in a real fight with Radford - who looked very weak in their game with Virginia Tech.

These reports can probably be pulled from reading the story and looking at the box score, I just thought I would share what they said in case any of you wanted to know as well. I’ll get in touch with them after the VT and Radford games as well if anyone is interested since we won’t get to see these guys live for a while yet.

Nice insight into the game. Not really surprised any. I wonder if there is a connection to our "playing" more in the 2nd half after DD got a T and was not on the floor the rest of the game. As much as I like DD's coaching style for the game of football, I just don't feel it works well in basketball , don't know why but thats just the way I see it.

They worked the game? Are you sure? From all of the comments they had, it sure sounds like they watched an awful lot of the game for guys who were supposed to be working. Or could it be that they refereed the game?
