The Defense....

Post by Falconfreak90 »

YOU GUYS ROCK!!! The D unit has taken a beating this year and some of the criticism was fair.

But last night, these guys came out looking for blood. The D line dominated a veteran Miami O line. They harassed Betts all night and pounded him into the turf. The LB's were flying around smacking the snot outta anyone with a red jersey. The DB's??? Just a great effort from them again. Loren Hargrove has stepped in for D Perry very nicely.

The D totally shut down an attack that was averaging 533 yards a game. Did Brandon Murphy even play? Stuffed....again and again. Loved the blitzes!! So we gave up a couple big plays....it will happen.

I just wanted to salute the D unit and Coach Lovett for the best D performance I've seen in a loooooooooooooooooooong time. And they were having a ton of fun doing it. For a unit that has been blasted all year, it was extremely satisfying seeing that performance last night.

Now, time to do it again in about 152 hours....

AWESOME JOB DEFENSE!!!

I was extremely pleased to see so many of the younger players being so active on defense. The pass rush was also great. It has been some time since we put pressure on a QB all game long.

They've been much quicker to the ball the last couple of weeks....maybe they're finally getting comfortable with coach Lovett's system and the personnel shifts that came along with it.

Terrel White has relly picked it up. MAC Wr's can't be looking forwrd to three more years of Antonio Smith and Kenny Lewis locking down the corners.

That looked like a completely different defense versus what we saw at the beginning of the year. Kudos to the players and coaches.

I'll be darned if it didn't look like somebody went and did some coaching this week.

They were two batted passes away from a total shut-out. The two TDs Betts lucked-out with, were both only one step short of being picked off as well. The coverage wasn't blown, the DB was just a hair two quick or slow to turn and get the ball.

Whatever they did, it worked against Kent and Miami the last couple of weeks. There has bee improvement even as far back as Akron. The real test is if they can do it three or four more weeks in a row. The amount of regression on defense this year is still inexcusable. The only thing that mitigates some of the frustration is seeing every other team in the MAC blow its own share of games.

Shane Montgomery, the Miami coach, thought it was the best defense and most confusing scheme he had seen since their Ohio State game:

They flew to the ball, pressured Betts all night and had bone-jarring hits in the secondary. The goal all along was to have the new personnel and new scheme hitting their stride by the end of the season, something that looks to have been achieved. They deserve an enormous amount of credit.

Gotta say Jelani Jordan has stepped up. Two picks last night. And a pick by The Fabulous Teddy P! Sweet!

While watching the game unfold online - thanks ESPN  - saw that we had two sacks (Williams and Parks) on the same series. When's the last time that happened?!

Way to go D!

I'd have to rewatch it, but it also appeared that the 2nd sack (Parks, I think) on that series looked like it was only a 3 man rush as well. Our DL absolutely dominated their OL, and I cannot EVER remember saying that about a BG team in the past 3 years.

If we tackle that well against Toledo, I really think they will struggle moving the ball. Their offense is predicated on getting the ball into the playmakers hands in space. If we can tackle well, we can put up a similar performance.

The talent seems to somewhat be there on D. Everything hinges on intensity. This begs the question -- Which BG defense will we see on Tuesday night at the Doyt? The WMU "I don't give a rat's ass" defense, or the Miami "time to die bitch" defense.

I stayed until my Miami Alum host said it was time to go with 9:50 on the clock in the fourth. The D looked great, the last time I saw that D was the marshall 2004 game.
