The two back sets.

Post by NWLB »

Have we been running a two back set all year, or was that new last night? It worked well, almost option-like in its ability to cause the Miami defense to jump the wrong way.

I'd assume they were running it to help protect Omar, but it was a nice twist. And the TE seemed to come out to play more this week as well.

They showed of the "ponies" set in the Spring Game, I believe. But when Pope went down, they pretty much shelved it.

It seems clear that they wanted to redshirt Macon from the beginning of the year and Pope's injury basically left them with two healthy backs - Lane and Thomas. With that little depth, a two-back set didn't make much sense.

Good to see it now, though!

We ran it in the first half against Wisky with great success and it worked great against Kent State in the first half. It is the only formation that has allowed us to run the ball successfully and I hope we see it a ton more against Toledo.

We still didn't run particularly well last night...at least PJ didn't. The holes aren't opening up like they have the past couple years, and PJ isn't getting into it nearly as quick as he used to.

BJ Lane looks to be a step or three quicker than PJ still.

PJ had a 15 yard run on the second drive that looked like the PJ of old, but everything else was tentative. I would like to see him a little more involved in the passing game outside of swing passes and screens as well. We had him wide open for 6 on a wheel route against Nande, but Omar just missed him. A big play like that may get his confidence back and hitting holes more often.

I thought the same thing...why isn't PJ going downfield, or over the middle against the blitz? Our running game was not great last night (I'm not complaining).

I think PJ was able to realy regain confidence in his ankles lastnight. He seemed to get faster and cut better as the night wore on.
i am telling you all we peaking at just the right time, our D is looking better and better, our O weapons are back, and we now have some additional ones to boot, the O line controlling scrimage real well. We are in a great place...gee i wonder if water the field this year if it will freeze?
I wonder how loud the doyt would be if everyone showed up for the toledo game with small airhorns, hint hint. think we could hit 110+db and make Brad cry and tom wet himself?

The running game did the job that was required last night....2 backs near 100 yards...ate up huge clock. sometimes it's a defensive offensive measure.

And because we seem to beat the same points to death, and I have not seen anyone mention it here at all today....when you watch the replay, or get tape from someone else...look at the end of BJ Lane's run in the 4th Q for a TD.....he gives the Miami DB a little wave as he outraces him to the end zone...BWAAAHAAAA!!!!!!!!! Loved it.
