Suppose we accept the claim that results from past games shouldn't matter. Does that mean that BG's loss to Akron shouldn't matter? That depends on which period of time "the past" refers to. That may vary depending on context. But in the context of football, it's natural to say, I think, that "the past" refers to previous seasons. In which case BG's loss to Akron is not in the past. So there's no reason to think that it shouldn't matter.
But, of course, none of this will matter after tonight's game, anyway.
