OK music majors, I need your help
A young lady in our church's youth group has BGSU on her list of potential colleges. She's looking to major in music, possibly performance; I know she plays multiple instruments (perscussion, string) and has been taking voice lessons for quite some time.
I can tell her all about the wonderful BG experience. I can tell her we have a great music program. But for the latter, what kind of details can I give her? Are there specific parts of the music program that are great? Are there certain facilities or equipment or opportunities that set BG apart from other schools?
Your assistance appreciated!

we have a very good music program overall and i know that we have one of the best saxophone, percussion, and trombone studios in the state. i don't know much about any of the string studios, but our percussion professor is amazing. We also have a few very good voice studios...some people double major in instrumental and vocal ed/performance. tell her to definitely look into it if it's something she really wants to do, because BG is a really good place to go for music. Make sure she looks over her music theory before she comes to audition so she can be prepared for the test, and also make sure she knows that it's a great deal of work, but totally worth it if that's what she loves.

Well, BG is an amazing school to come to for any kind of education, and mix that in with a great music school, and you've got a Music Ed degree that is hard to top. The MuEd professors here are all top-notch and constantly doing research and publishing their findings in all of the journals out there. As for performance, it all depends on what she plays, and how she gets along with the professor(s) for that instrument. If anything else, sending an email to a prof and asking for a lesson would be the best way to go there.
The facilities are great as well. It may take a while to figure out the numbering of the rooms in the CMA, but it all works out eventually. The building has plenty of practice rooms, and the whole building is open from 7am-1am daily. If there are any other questions, just ask.

Thats a bunch of bs too. I'm sorry, but during the year everyone should be practicing their asses off, and a lot of people don't. If you only put in time before a jury you deserve to fail. The only reason people ever stress out about any sort of public performance is because they haven't learned their piece ahead of time (i.e., practiced). As long as you have everything learned, public performances should be no different than when you're in a practice room.goofyeuph wrote:except prior to juries, mid terms, performaces, or any other time that you really need one.bgmaggot00 wrote:The building has plenty of practice rooms,
I had to vent.

As one of the 4-5 trumpet players (out of like 44) in the two/three (if you count the TA) studios that actually does practice regularly, I completely agree with that. It's amazing how much better off you can be if you just work hard the whole year, rather than just at the end of the semester.

Carl, at one point BGSU education one out of every nine band directors in the nation.1987alum wrote:A young lady in our church's youth group has BGSU on her list of potential colleges. Historically BGSU has had one of the premier music education schools in the nation. I had my pick when graduating and I applied to BGSU and didn't apply to any other school. BG was it. I toured some other schools but didn't feel "it".
I didn't graduate with a music major at all, but I still think they are one of the top programs in the midwest if not the country.

1987, I helped at the Preview Day program in October and talked to a number of students and parents. Our College of Musical Arts has a national reputation. Among the visitors I met that day who were interested in that College were folks from Maryland, New York City, Chicago and Colorado.
The auditioned entry makes it quite competitive as others have mentioned. She can go on line and review the College. If she is a junior or younger, she should certainly consider the Junior Practice Audition opportunity if she is serious about BG.
Go Falcons!

Linky to prospective music student information.
If she plays in a band, she might want to check out the annual New Music Reading Clinic at BG... it's an event for high school band students to come to BG for a weekend to learn and play new music all together, under rather esteemed composers. I believe any high school student can audition to be a part of it, and it would give her an opportunity to see first-hand what the College of Musical Arts is like. (Someone who knows more about this, please correct/ add to this info!)
