Instant reaction to tonight's loss
Instant reaction to tonight's loss
Without having read any of the running commentary here, I just wanted to say a few things about tonight's loss.
First off, it hurts. A lot. To lose such a big game to your arch-rival at home, well, losses don't come with much more pain than that.
But aside from the outcome, I couldn't imagine a better game. It was everything a rivalry game should be. Intensity. Big plays. Double overtime. Seniors stepping up - The Fabulous Teddy P getting a blocked punt, P.J. reminding us of why he's one of the greatest Falcon backs ever, Sharon and Sanders playing like the all-time greats that they are. The gutsy Mike Thaler cramping up in the first overtime, but gamely throwing his body into the pile. This was a classic.
It saddens me, too, to think that our seniors will not only go out on a losing note, but go out without a bowl game. Sanders, Sharon, Pope, Lane, Thaler, Teddy P, Jordan ... that's a great disappointment.
I'm too drained to think beyond that. I suspect that, after a wave of "fire Brandon" doom-predicting threads, it's going to get very, very quiet around here.
But tomorrow is another day.

i've been waiting for a few minutes here to read your sage words, beacuse i know that you'll say the right things sensibly. i think that you've said it as well as it can be said for the reasonable falcon fans.
i was, without a doubt, very disappointed at the outcome of the game. i am not, however, disappointed about the game. it's the best bg-ut game that i've seen (although that only covers a seven year window). the game was back and forth and back and forth, and both teams came up with big plays throughout the game. do i wish we had won? of course i do. am i happy that we lost to ut? heck no. do i usully want to kick people in the crotch when they ask themselves rhetorical questions? you betcha. i appreciate all that this team, and especially this class of seniors, has done to make falcon football good. i will keep my head high, and continue to be a proud fan of the falcons.

MACMAN
Yes a great game...cold but great. How cold.. on the first snap of OT it was 13 with the wind chill. this low greenbayesc temp put the damper on both team ability to pass as prolificly as desired. I am glad that for both teams there were not many injuries, a tradegedy more pronounced in cold weather games. Untill next year then.
Omar...please stay and beat WI, Bosie, FL INT, Ohio State, and win the frinking MACC

I don't get to view as many games as most around here. But many questionable calls really had me scratching my head.
1. On the 3rd and 7 in the 2nd OT, why bother with the crossing pattern? And if that is the first option (to Sharon), you have to be prepared to think about going for it on 4th down. The crossing pattern was not working, most of the night.
2. The defense looked exhausted. The zone defense they played lacked any consistency, often having very large areas for the Toledo QB to make throws. Usually on the sidelines. Either it was a breakdown on responsibility or poor communication.
3. Knowing that the defense looked really tired, I'm not sure why Brandon didn't go for it on 4th and 5 with 38 seconds at the Toledo 45. Even if BG failed on the 4th down conversion, Toledo would have somewhere around 30 seconds to move at least 25 yards (into the wind) for a 45+ yard FG. Obviously, the 5 yard penalty didn't help.
4. Which brings me to the play call on that 4th and inches. Why would you try to draw the defense off-sides? Be the aggressor, snap the ball quickly, and get the 3 inches for that 1st down. Just pathetic.

That made no sense punting with the wind. Two Ton Toledo Tommy went for on 4th and 10 at a similar field position, we punted into the end zone....HappyBG wrote:The one call I was really surprised on was when BG punted on 4th and one in the 2nd qtr. Count me in as scratching my head at that call as well. I have (had) a ton more confidence on the offense picking up a couple yards, then I do in our special teams actually making a good play and pinning UT inside the ten. For my two cents, once your inside the opponents 40, you have got to call plays with the expectation that you will go for it on fourth down and not punt it.RobbyFalcon wrote:That made no sense punting with the wind. I agree, but the false start penanlty when it was 3rd and 1 ruined that drive. If we don't get that penalty, we get a shot to win it in regulation. I still would have liked to see us go for it and try to win, instead of settling for OT where I had a bad, bad feeling. When we had to settle for a FG in the 2OT, I knew Toledo was going for the kill....and they did.orangeandbrown wrote:I did think the fourth quarter punt on 4-6 was the right thing to do.

The false start was on 4th and 1, and yes, it hurt a whole bunch. You are right on the FG...I had a bad feeling at that point. Problem is, at that part of the field, if you turn it over UT probably wins with a FG. If anything, that extra half yard PJ didn't get on third down may go down as playing a bigger role in our loss.
