HE MADE A FIELD GOAL!

Post by ColeMagner »

Timchenko made a 37-yard feild goal tonight. Boy was i surprised. I could barely watch him attept that. I was wondering what brandon was thinking, i mean come on he's missed how many EXTRA POINTS this season. I was extremely happy when i saw him pound it through but obviously that wasnt enough for the falcons.

And he drilled it. That would have been good from a long, long way!

Now about that attempt that ended the first half ...

Gregg Brandon must carry his stones around in a wheelbarrow, because there is no way I would have went Timchenko out there to kick that thing. I could barely watch.

Guess Timchenko -- and Brandon -- proved me wrong.

I would have been seriously tempted to go for two in the first overtime if I were Brandon, just based on the strength of our kicking game. Anyone else think that?

Oh, yeah, that certainly occurred to me. I mean, you lose in OT on a missed XP, that hurts. Plus, were we really in a better position long-term. Like Stutz said in the post game, he likes his team on a short field.

It wasn't fear of making an extra point that would have driven me to go for two on the first OT. Rather, I feared getting into a field goal match in latter overtimes...

I was thinking the same thing but my line of thinking was based on the way Toledo moved the ball at the end of regulation and in the 1st OT . Our defensive guys looked to be out of gas. But it takes a set of cajones for a coach to put his neck on the line like that. I know Joe Novak did it earlier this year with a 1 point deficit late in the game against Northwestern but they didn't convert. I agree with his thinking though, "This will be our best chance to win the game".

I'm sure John Bowers will coach our special teams again.

I agree that the thought of going for two crossed my mind. But as I said in another thread about punting on fourth and 5 with 30 secs to go, the coach opens himself up to criticism if he takes the chance at winning the game, but not if he plays it safe and extends the game. Why is it better, in a conventional wisdom sort of way, to lose the game if you play longer instead of losing because you took a shot at winning?
