Hidden play
That one got me, too. Not that they blitzed, but that they blitzed two CB's from outside the numbers. 99% of the time, that isn't working against an offense that throws that many short passes.Warthog wrote:Here's my second hidden play. Third and 10 from the Toledo 25 on their last drive in regulation. Since the average play nets about seven yards, just play good defense and we should stop them short of a first down. What do we do? Corner blitz. TE heads right to the area vacated by the blitzer. Pass completion for 13 yards and a first down. Blitzing on third and long is just plain stupid. If we stop them there, they punt, and maybe never get the ball back.
As for throwing deep to Sharon and missing (from another post in this thread)... if it connects, it's the best call in the game. Just because it missed doesn't mean it's all of a sudden crappy coaching. And after watching the game last year, I hardly think a 14-0 deficit after two possessions would make UT *have* to switch anything up too drastically.

If you're referring to my comment, let me repeat that I wasn't against the call, but felt that going three and out after a blocked punt was a major letdown; also, it seems that when we miss on a deep pass, our drives inevitably stall.TG1996 wrote:As for throwing deep to Sharon and missing (from another post in this thread)... if it connects, it's the best call in the game. I figured that's what you meant, I just took it to mean "why are we trying these deep balls" if they're setting a drive up to potentially stall? sorry if I misinterpreted. I wish we would have gone deep to Sharon more often...or at least run some slants off play action.... that CB was playing 10-15 yards off him all night!1987alum wrote:If you're referring to my comment, let me repeat that I wasn't against the call, but felt that going three and out after a blocked punt was a major letdown; also, it seems that when we miss on a deep pass, our drives inevitably stall.

Amen. Except it was more like 4th-and-2, and Bruce picked up an easy 3 yards on a flipping QB sneak! That was the most infuriating screw-up of the night. We stop them on that play, we win. I was screaming "TIMEOUT" from the top of my lungs. Why on God's green earth did we not call time-out?! Because the players and coaches all had their heads up their A$$! That play epitomized the entire season.Hidden play
There are always big plays that are keys to big games that are easy to see. The roughing the kicker, the personal foul on Mayberry, etc. But there is usually a few lesser noticed plays that make the difference as well. Here is my one overlooked play that cost us dearly.
About three minutes to go in the game, Toledo driving, third and whatever picks up enough to make it fourth and one at our 35. Everybody in the stadium and watching on TV knows they are going for it. Everybody except our defense that is. Toledo hustled to the line and quick snapped the ball while our def ends were still trying to figure out where the TE was so they would know which side of the formation to line up on. Gradkowski easily picks up the first down.
If we just call a TO (we had three left) we could have at least have gotten time to get set up. This would have let the crowd get into the play as well. The ball game was on the line. We stop them there and we win the game. But no, we were running around like a bunch of confused kids while the play was being run. Outcoached again.
