OSU pay out 2006

Post by PGY Tiercel »

Didn't see this mentioned anywhere, crucify me if it is  That will be a nice chunk of money since traveling costs are low. It may be the same as 2 years ago, but next year should get us some big money.

from the Blade last week.
4. Paul Krebs. The Bowling Green athletic director got done what Toledo's Mike O'Brien could not - Krebs secured a big payday next season in the biggest venue. The Falcons will pull down $600,000 for playing Ohio State on Oct. 7 in Ohio Stadium. At a mid-major school, that will pay a lot of bills. And if Omar Jacobs sticks around, he and Troy Smith could provide plenty of offensive fireworks.

Wow....$600,000 is quite a payday.

I was thinking of not taking the Freaklings due to $65 PER tix in the Shoe next year. But I know we'll go. I am starting to save $$$ NOW for next yr's tickets....gonna be around $800 for season tix and all the road games. At least.

I won't be there. A buddy of mine is getting married that day. They had the wedding planned for an OSU bye week, because the bride's family are all huge Buckeye fans. Oh well, I'll save $65 and only listen to the bloodbath on the radio.

I'm debating between this one and Wisky at Cleveland for my big roadtrip... the Columbus trip would be shorter and I could revisit the stomping grounds, but I don't know that I want to mess with OSU fans. (Cue whining and bump to other schools forum.)

Besides, if I space things out, I'm gonna want to get to the Boise game at the Doyt, too... that would be three games in a few weeks, and might be a bit hard on the budget and vacation schedule.

Oh, and I vote for renaming it the "See, UT? This money could have been yours but your AD is a prick. Center"

That's interesting. OSU offered us something like $400,000 if I remember correctly and we told them we wanted what San Diego State was getting, which was $750,000. They probably realized the $400K wasn't going to cut it and offered BG somewhere in the middle and the Falcons jumped on it. Congrats!

I will take UT's 2006 OOC schedule though. We host Kansas and play at Iowa State and at Pittsburgh. We still have one more game to fill, but our AD office wants a home game to give us 6 home games in 2006. Could be a Sun Belt team, or worse a I-AA school. But then again, with a brand new QB playing 3 BCS schools a 1 I-AA/Sun Belt school will be plenty.

UT's deal with OSU was for 2008 though, not 2006. We still have 1 OOC game to schedule with 2 at home and 1 on the road as of now. OSU could still happen from what I am told, but they have to accept the fact that we won't take as little as $400K from them.

I like BG's OOC schedule (except maybe FIU) next year, although I'd like to have a slate like that with a few more guns coming back. I'm not sure what we'll be able to expect on the field next year, but the bottom line sure gets a helluva boost!

That's a solid OOC sked for UT next year, rf. All winnable games for UT.
Wisky, OSU and Boise is gonna be awfully tough for BG.

That's some pretty good cash, especially considering that BG only has to travel about two hours or so to get there. I think that they only offered UT something like $375,000 and I think that it was for 2008 instead of 2006, so the falcons aren't filling that open slot. Technically (in 2006 $), the falcons are getting $600,000 as opposed to $350-$360,000 that they offered UT. Great deal for the falcons.
UT is listed in the 2004 edition of The Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges by Trent Anderson and Seppy Basili as one of the U.S. schools with the “Most Beautiful Urban Campus.”

It helps when your AD is attached at the hips with OSU and one of OSU's Associate AD's has his hips attached to BG.

A little history on the BG-OSU 2006 contract and the OSU-San Diego contract:

Krebs was the #2 person at OSU before taking the BG gig. The Associate AD in charge of Development at OSU is Tom Hof. Tom graduated from BG around the same time as Krebs. His father is also the former Alumni Director and VP of Development at BG (Jim Hof).

As for San Diego State, their President is a BG grad (a 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient from the BGSU Alumni Association) and an Ohio native. Also, OSU was to play San Diego State on September 15, 2001. But due to the unforeseen events of that week, the game was moved to an open date in October. As part of that original deal, OSU was to have played in San Diego this year. Instead San Diego figured they could make more money going to C-bus then having the Bucks going to play at Jack Murphy. The game was guaranteed to be on national TV (ABC or ESPN if in Columbus), but not so if on the left coast. They would have been shut out by a PAC 10 game or a WAC game. Another factor in their contract is that the AD who helped negotiate it is Rick Bay, who was AD at OSU when Earle Bruce was fired. Bay quit in protest. He went on to help lead the Gateway project in Cleveland, which as most of you from C-land know, resulted in Jacobs Field and Gund Arena. He then left to become AD at San Diego State and stepped down or "left to purse other interests" within the last year or so.

As a result, OSU lucked out and had all of their games on National Television (ABC or ESPN), except for the Indiana game. The networks love OSU because they draw so well on TV.

In essence, OSU added a little extra "something, something" to the pot to entice SDS and BG to play. Helps when you have a great history together. Can't say the same about UT.

Yep, Hof is a good guy too, I know him personally. I wonder if he did have any influence on the BG deal. I assume he might have.

Hey there Rocket Football.

Don't worry about the OOC you got coming up, I think you'll be in excellent hands at QB. Might be some growing pains, but he should fine and around for next 3 years to boot!

I don't know, Gradkowski leaves a HUGE void in Toledo.

But, they said the same thing about Harris....
