This just in. The UT Alumni Association is going to charter a flight provided enough people signup. Problem is that it will be much cheaper to drive.

Because of the snow storm last year, I think there were people who drove and got back to BG sooner than those who flew.

At any rate, congrats to the Rockets on well deserved bid. We had our shot and didn't come through.

I don't think it's right that UT be selected for the GMAC bowl prior to the championship game. If Akron were to win that game, NIU would be left out and that would be a disaster in my opinion. NIU beat UT on their home field. While NIU has 4 losses, 2 of those came to Big10 opponents. They have only 2 MAC losses, no different than UT.

Now, the bowls will get lucky and save face because NIU will not lose to Akron a second time. Akron will not be bowl eligible after they lose.

Some said the situation was the same for us last year getting the GMAC, but no, it was not the same. We did not get the GMAC bowl until the two teams going to the title game had their bowls. GMAC admittedly wanted to get BG vs. Memphis, but they stated they could not and would not pick us unless the two teams in the title game had a bowl in hand.

Are you certain about that?

I recall one of the trustees at UT getting all bent out of shape because we had the GMAC bid in hand before the Rockettes knew they were going to the MCB.

That was the chairman of the board. I think he made several idiotic comments in the paper that even had TU people shaking their head from the embarassment.

NIU will be in the bowls no matter what. There are only 58 bowl eligible teams right now, and 56 slots for bowls. This means that even if you eliminate 2 of the other 3 eligible teams from the MAC (Western Mich, BG, Miami), NIU still makes it in.

BGSU33 wrote:Congrats to Toledo, they deserved it and earned a trip to the GMAC Bowl. The fact if the matter is, no matter what you think about Toledo, over the last seven or eight years, they always seem to be right in the thick of things for post season play. They get to bowl games and have won some MAC titles in recent years, and their program is a measuring stick for many MAC teams. BG has had some recent success, but Toledo has just been the better program lately in the entire league. I hope we can build the type of program that is playing in the postseason as often as Toledo here at BG. They just always seems to find ways to get it done by having good regular seasons and then play in the MACC or a bowl game.
Same here. Excellent post.

I believe the count is 64 eligible teams, so yes, it is possible that NIU could get screwed. They must win the MACC game. There will only be 2 MAC teams going bowling.

As for the BG sitiuation last year, the bowl counts were in and it was known that the MAC would get several bowl bids. It was also know that some of the other bowls would be just as attractive, if not more so, than the GMAC bowl. They only extended the offer to BG after the MAC had secured other tie-ins. The bowl organizers were scrambling and actually running to the MAC to get a team. While it was not known who would go where, it was known that we had secured the Independence Bowl and that one was to better than the GMAC. Also, MCB had first rights to the winner of the MAC. This opened the door for GMAC to select BG. The only teams not knowing if they would have a bowl were NIU and Marshall. It was known that BG, UT, and Miami would have a bowl game.

As for NIU, they were feeling screwed again this time last year. They had beaten us earlier in the year, yet we got the GMAC before it was known if the MAC would secure a fourth bowl. NIU was screwed the prior year, because they had a great year with 2 losses and still no bowl. Now here's NIU again, in a pretty shaky bowl situation when they beat the team that has already secured a bowl and they still have work to do to get in.

For that very reason, I hope NIU drills Akron.
