Chew on this scenario for a moment ...

Post by 1987alum »

The other thread discussing next year's schedule got me thinking.

The NCAA has publicly stated that 6-6 teams will not be bowl-eligible anymore. With that in mind, imagine this ...

BG goes 0-4 in its OOC schedule and stumbles to another 5-3 mark in the MAC. They win the East by a tie-breaker, a la Akron this year. That puts them in the MACC game at 5-7. Even if the win that game, making them MAC Champions, they are 6-7 and not bowl-eligible. They could petition the NCAA, of course, but if there are two other MAC teams that are bowl-eligible (Toledo, NIU, WMU), why would the NCAA grant that waiver.

I dunno. I guess my mind is really stuck on football even though the season is over.

Get that inside source back on the phone!

I'm thinking that a few years ago this happened to a team like North Texas, but as the designated champion of their conference, they went to a bowl as a 5-6 team.

Tell me about it! I'm so sick to my stomach about how this year ended and how the season unfolded, I can hardly get myself to watch any more games - and that's hard for me to understand because I simply love college football. I'll be watching the MAC Championship game as much as I can, but all it's going to do is make me think about all the woulda, coulda, shouldas that could have had us in Detroit. It's just hard to think that either NIU or Akron is going to win the MAC title we all thought we were going to bring home for the first time since 1992. Just like in basketball, I'm getting tired of saying "maybe next year." :(

TG: I believe that was because the conference was contractually obligated to provide a team to a bowl and none were above .500. Yep, that's the Sun Belt.
