Dec. 2, 2005
WALTHAM, Mass. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University fifth-year senior Mike Thaler has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Team. Thaler was named to the second team.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio (LaSalle H.S.), Thaler maintains a 3.46 cumulative grade point average as a Production/Purchasing major. On the field, he finished the year with 65 tackles, good for fifth on the team. That total included seven tackles for loss, and Thaler led the team with 5.5 sacks on the year.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of American, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II and III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
The Falcons finished 6-5 overall and 5-3 in Mid-American Conference play.
The complete ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Team can be found at the CoSIDA web site.

THIS is why college football is played, and THIS is why I cheer on the Falcons - win OR lose.
A hearty congrats to you, Mike. You are an exceptional representative of Bowling Green State University in the most important arena. You have had a WONDERFUL career on the field, but that is just gravy on top of this!
When you graduate I will be honored to call you a fellow alum.
