notes from around the nation. Omar, bowls, Brandon to inter

Post by MACMAN »

this is a buch of information that I have found around the web that may or may not be of interest. Stuff on Omar and his pro prospects, grades and bowl eligable, and Greg Brandons potential interview at San diego State ( i dont see why he would leave SDSU would be a lateral move in my opinion, but inverviewing is always a good thing. anyway many of you may have read this already.
Omar Jacobs.
*Jacobs is a quarterback who's future looks bright with his combination of athletic skills and pocket awareness, who often overshadows the players around him
* He has the size you look for to stand strong in the pocket, has the arm strength and touch on a variety of passes needed to lead his team down field, he is also a very efficient passer, in that he has a good touchdown to interception ratio
* He is a patient quarterback in the pocket, that has excellent decision making skills, that has the mobility and smooth movement in the pocket to keep plays alive and make plays on the run, he is a quarterback that prefers to throw first and make things happen with his feet second, he looks to keep his eyes down field to complete the pass first
* When his option is to scramble for yardage he has the versatility and skill set to do so, he is a quick decision maker in this department, when all possibilities to throw are limited to none, he quickly tucks the ball down and becomes a dangerous threat on the run
* With his combination of size, decision making, confidence on the field, and athletic ability he has the potential to be a franchise quarterback at the next level
* The one thing I would like him to work on is his delivery, he looks to have a hitch in his throw before delivering the ball, other than that the ceiling is very high for this player
Betting and player impact on the odds-
On the other hand, take a look at Bowling Green this season. Their starting QB is Omar Jacobs. On November 15th, Jacobs was listed as day-to-day with a shoulder injury. With Jacobs under center, our power rating for Bowling Green was around 90. With his backup, that rating dropped to 76. Conclusion: Jacobs is worth at least 14 points compared to his backup. That's huge. Jacobs played on 11/15, and Bowling Green won easily in a game where Miami-Ohio closed as a 9-point favorite. Jacobs playing would have had us feeling that Bowling Green might win outright.

Report: 41 percent of bowl teams fall short academically

Forty-one percent of this year's bowl-bound college football teams fall below the NCAA's new academic benchmark, and almost half of them lacked a 50 percent graduation rate, according to an annual survey released Monday.

The 56 Division I football teams headed to bowl games have a lingering problem of too many student-athletes failing to complete their studies, said Richard Lapchick, the University of Central Florida professor who authored the annual report.

"The key is admitting students who are qualified to be in that school," Lapchick said.

This is the first year Lapchick has used the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate to measure the bowl-bound schools' academic progress. In past years, the study relied solely on graduation rates. In the future schools that do not make the grade may not make the Bowl.

Hirings and firing: Kansas State officials formally announced the hiring of Virginia offensive coordinator Ron Prince as head coach of the Wildcats at a news conference.

The 36-year-old Prince, raised in nearby Junction City, Kan., will become only the fourth black head football coach in Division I, joining Washington's Ty Willingham, Mississippi State's Sylvester Croom and UCLA's Karl Dorrell.

• Virginia defensive coordinator Al Golden will become the new Temple coach, a school official told the Associated Press.

• San Diego State coach Tom Craft was fired after failing to post a winning record in four seasons, and athletics director Jeff Schemmel promised to hire a replacement "who can excite the community. “ Bowling Green State head coach Greg Brandon, is one of several coaches already slated to be invited. The interviews will take place over the next few weeks.

Due to the nature of the GB "news" and the rosiness of the OJ scouting report, I'm guessing a lot of that info is from last off-season.

What size suit do you think GB would wear, and what color should we get?

Aren't we being a little quick to wish Brandon was leaving? Has he really had that much of a chance to prove himself? If 6-5 is a bad season for us under his watch I'd say that's pretty good! It could always get worse, but shouldn't he get that chance before we start offering to drive him to his future interviews. If he decides to leave, then I'm sure he's making the best decision for him, but I for one am not going to wish him gone. It would be nice to have some stability at the coaching helm. Maybe that in itself would help recruiting.

I think Gregg Brandon has done a good job here, but I know I'm probably in the minority

I agree. Sure the guy has made mistakes but to say I wish he was gone? I don't think so.

See the Moe Ankney years...it could be a heck of a lot worse. BG WILL be back next year playing for the title. Sinking ship? I don't see it.

I've had a chance to relax a little since the season ended. I don't wish him to be gone and still believe he can succeed. I don't think it would be a tragedy if he left, either.

PS--that link doesn't mention the Brandon invite.

Like ya'll I've watched a lot of BG football the past few seasons.

It's painfully clear to me that the 2005 team was not as good as the 2004 team which was not as good as the 2003 team. Personally, I don't really want to see where that trend takes us. It's not bad enought that I want the guy fired, but I would certainly be happy to take our program in a new direction. I just think that it's a lot easier to maintain success at this level than it is to regain it once you're in the cellar, and I don't want to risk the above trend taking us to the cellar.

As somebody who listened to every word of his infamous 1470 interview, perhaps I'm putting too much weight on that, but that was the last straw for me. I'll continue to go to games, and continue to hope for great success for Gregg Brandon. I hope I'm dead wrong on my assessment of him as coach. But watching the steady decline of our team, coupled with what sounded like a defeated man who had NONE of the answers on that radio interview, I will not be sad to see him leave.
