Loved you at the Hockey Game

Post by always a falcon »

Thanks to the Athletic Band for a great appearance at tonight's hockey game. You sounded marvelous!

As someone who went to school with the ice area jammed every game, it is hard to take the empty seats. But the band adds a lot of electricity to the crowd that is there. And I for one, appreciate your efforts!

Keep up the good work at all the games!

Along with the "Crazy Train."

Agreed, it was cool/funny the first time, but after that, it just got old. We must've heard that 4-5 times tonight. Aargh.... and the Athletic Jazz Combo we had going for a while. Don't get me wrong, I love jazz, but thats not exactly the venue to be wailing on some Charlie Parker or Miles Davis when you're supposed to be part of a complete band. OK, enough for now, GO FALCONS!

in the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 seasons. the final two years of three bands, the bird of prey band had big bad instrumentation, and we played some big band charts in addition to the standard a band rep.

Oh, I was talking about last night. If its organized in a big-band format I've got no issues. Its just when people start playing when they shouldn't that it irritates me.

Ah. Yeah, that. I thought that's what you might have meant.

NOT that it's an excuse (because I didn't like all the random playing either) but I wouldn't be surprised if there was more of it than usual because they were a little bored with not playing. All through the first period we had to take turns with the canned music, per the Athletic Department's instructions. (And then there's the apparent no-playing-while-we-have-a-penalty policy... and it seemed like we had an awful lot of 'em last night. :? )

Here's a question. Why do they even play canned music? I do not understand that at all. Totally understandable if there's no band, but to ask the band to TAKE TURNS with the canned music?! Seriously, that's ridiculous- why even bother to have a band? It seems like such a slap in the face. :x

Apparently it's an "experiment" to "see how the crowd reacts."

But I feel the same way as you about it. :x

What I heard was that they don't want "silence" during a stop in play, so if the band isn't playing, they are going to jump in there with the canned music. I thought the band played much more last night than tonight. With every stop in play, the band MUST JUMP IN THERE AND PLAY or they will put the canned music on...which I hate, btw!!! It is SOOOO much better when the band plays and there is a LOT MORE that the band could be doing to lead the crowd, but this weekend's games were a good start!!! So, keep up the good work and PLAY!!!!

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Is true. But for the first period last night and tonight, they weren't giving us an option. It was first whistle, canned music; second whistle, band; third whistle, canned music... etc.
Falcon Fanatic wrote:I thought the band played much more last night than tonight.
Might have seemed that way because last night we took our break with everyone else after the second period, and tonight we took it the first ten minutes of second period, like we used to. It works better for us because the breaks between periods are the only time we get to play "whole songs" instead of just snippets and shorts. I think when we were actually in the stands, we were playing more tonight. Apparently we're not supposed to play when BG has a penalty going, and there were a lot fewer penalties tonight!

Thanks for the compliments. It's always nice to know we're wanted. :D

i totally agree. between the bass player playing whatever he wants, whenever he wants... the drummer doing the same (especially during crowd cheers... which simply muffles them)... and all the random other people playing... it gets REALLY annoying whether i'm in the band at the time or watching as a fan.

so a rule of thumb for a-banders: ONLY PLAY WHEN YOU'RE TOLD, NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, NO MATTER WHAT INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY.

thanks. that'd be sweet.

Do you all still play rocky when the team comes out?

Yes we do. Every time the team comes out, it's time for Rocky. I went to a couple of the hockey games prior to the Athletic band season and it was sad because the canned music did not play Rocky. If you have to have canned music, at least make it the traditional songs. Stupid canned music.

As for the random playing in the stands, I agree that it needs to end. But one saving grace is that you can't hear at the opposite end of the arena. I was at the game on Friday night down in Section A and you could only hear the whole band songs. I'm not defending those who play on their own, but at least it doesn't make the whole band sound bad to everyone in attendance.
GO FALCONS!!
