Health Workers Threaten Nationwide Strike
The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), on Wednesday said its members would withdraw their services with effect from 6th of March 2017, if the federal government fails to do the needful to avert the industrial action.
The President, NUAHP, Comrade Obinna Ogbonna who disclosed this in an exclusive chat with newsmen said the union is embarking on a nationwide strike because over the years, the association and joint health sector unions had been in a running battle with the federal government, federal ministry of health over implementation of collectively bargained agreements the government had with the union since 2009.
Ogbonna said the union had over time urged the Federal Government to implement various court judgments by the Federal Ministry of Health and abolish various obnoxious circular, policies from the ministry that are aimed at repressing and demoralizing its members in the health sector.
He said, “Our union and the joint health sector unions had tried over the years to show understanding and restrain from carrying out strike actions because of the poor Nigerians who may not be able to afford flying their sick relatives abroad for medical care when we are on strike.
“The union had respected the intervention of well meaning Nigerians in the past. We had given several ultimata to the federal government to address the lingering demands since 2009 but our patience and understanding had been taken for granted.”
Ogbonna said if the federal government fails to attend to all their demands, the union would embark on a nationwide strike which will commence on Monday, 6th March, 2017
It will be recalled that the Union issued a 30-day strike ultimatum to the government for willfully ignoring the plight of its members and inflicting pains on Nigerians.
