Strike : Academic Activities Begin In UNILAG

Normal academic activities on Monday, commenced at the University of Lagos, despite ongoing industrial action by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

Although the non academic staff of the university is still on strike, it was learnt that students returned to school last week as lectures resumed.

Lectures have since commenced despite the fact that non academic staff with includes members of SSANU, NASU and NAAT, are yet to resume work.

To this end, new students who were to commence registration last year before the strike are being registered.

According to the spokesperson of SSANU, Salaam Abdussobur, the strike action still continues, saying its members have been told to stay away from work.

“If they are having lectures that is not our problem but let us see how they can sustain it. Our members are not the ones who are teaching them and it does not in any way affect the strike or our resolve” he stated.

The Joint Action Committee of the three bodies had on Sunday night, issued a statement directing it’s members not to submit to pressure by authorities pressing them to resume work. It had withdrawn its earlier stand not to join on grounds of compassion and sympathy for the system.
