Ekiti Poll: Police Arrest 27 For Electoral Offence, Arraign 11
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Bello Ahmed who disclosed this to journalists said the arrests were was made by the police a day to the election and on the election day .
In a statement signed by the State Command Public Relations Officer, Caleb Okechulwu, 11 of the arrested persons have been arraigned in court.
He said: “The peaceful conduct of the election is not without attempts by certain individuals to truncate the process.
“We commend some well spirited individuals who promptly alerted and informed the police about the activities of these persons.
“Prompt response of the police a day to the election and on the election day led to the arrest of 27 persons for various electoral offences which includes impersonate security agency on election day, undue influence of electorate, snatching of ballot boxes and attempt to disrupt electoral process.
“Eleven of the persons so far arrested have been arraigned in court. Investigation into the involvement of the others is ongoing and they would be arraigned in court if found culpable at the end of the investigation.”
In a separate statement in Ado Ekiti on Friday, Ahmed said the maturity displayed the parties and after their supporters had helped in dousing the tension and fear in some quarters that the poll might escalate into a full scale war among contenders .
He, however, cautioned members of the state chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) against heating up the polity to prevent the post -election peace being enjoyed by the populace from being truncated.
Bello said the police won’t tolerate any act that could trigger violence and lead to loss of lives and property.
