Ogun Proscribes Transport Unions, Constitutes Committee For Parks Revenues

Ogun state government on Tuesday proscribed the National Union of Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

The two most vibrant unions proscribed in the state were replaced by a 13 – man committee charged with the responsibilities of coordinating activities of transport unions which included revenue generation from the sales of daily tickets into the coffers if the state government.

A statement issued in Abeokuta, the state capital and signed by Kunle Somorin, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) the state governor, Dapo Abiodun said the committee is headed by Barrister Sunday Olufemi Adeniyi.

Somorin, in the statement, explained that mandate of the committee for transport unions included the review the unions’ operations and also make recommendations on how the unions could be better organised to support the developmental agenda of the state.

“The committee is expected to educate and create awareness amongst the stakeholders in the sector on the need to ensure peaceful conduct at all times and avoid any activities that could undermine peace, security and safety of life and property in the state”.

It would be recalled that activities of members if the transportation unions in Ogun, has in recent time, constituted guidance and apprehensions to members of the public.

The development has also compelled the state command of the Police to intermittently threaten severe sanctions against any members of the transport union caught fomenting troubles in any part of the state.

But the CPS in his statement further stated that other terms of reference for the transport committee included how to institute disciplinary procedures, actions against any conduct or behaviour that could undermine public peace and harness the revenue potential of the road transport for enhanced internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and identification and addressing of any issue(s) that may improve the overall performance of the transport sector in the state.
