4 Shot Dead In Ondo Varsity Cult Clash
No fewer than four persons were reportedly shot dead during a clash between two cult groups on Friday night in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.
The clash, which happened between 10 pm and 11 pm around Medoline Villa, one of the private halls of residence occupied by students of the varsity in the town, saw the two cult groups engage in a shooting spree.
The clash caused pandemonium in the area and the residents of the area scampered for safety.
It was gathered that those who were indoors locked their doors even though they initially thought it was robbery that was going on.
A detachment of policemen was said to have moved to the scene upon receiving a distress call from one of the residents in the area.
However, in a statement signed by the Acting Registrar of the institution Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa at the weekend entitled: “Condolence Message On The Death Of Two Students Of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko” confirmed that two students died during the week.
Akinfemiwa , however, ascribed the death of one of them to gunshot from unidentified gunmen on Friday.
According to the statement, “The University Management received, with rude shock, the loss of two of our students to death in the course of the week.
“On admission of Miss Temitope Patience Ayedun, a 200 Level of the Department of Educational Management, at the University Health Centre, the Medical Personnel tried their best to manage her until she was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo where she was intensively managed before she died on Thursday, 5th March 2020.
“The news of the death of Mr. Olakunle Matthew Olayinka, a 300-Level student of the Department of Biochemistry, following wounds from gunshot by unidentified gunmen, was received last night, Friday, 6th March 2020, after the Medical personnel at the University Health Centre put up spirited efforts to stabilise him. The Security agents are still on the trail of the assailants for apprehension.”
The varsity management led by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, therefore, commiserated with the families of the deceased.
The statement revealed that the University Management has beefed up security within and outside the campus to forestall recurrence of the incident.
As a result of the incident, the varsity authority postponed, “the First Semester University-wide GST and ENT CBT examinations for 2019/2020 academic session earlier scheduled for Monday, 9th March 2020 to Thursday, 12th March 2020 till further notice.”
