EKSG Trains Health Workers To Recognise “At Risk” Pregnant Women

Ekiti state government has reiterated its commitment to ensure that the scourge of maternal and newborn mortality in Ekiti state is discouraged.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services Dr. Oyebanji Filani who was represented by the board chairman of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency Chief Mrs Monisola Oloro stated this while declaring open a ten-day modified life skills training program for senior health extension workers in Ekiti state.

The commissioner said maternal mortality ratio for Nigeria ranges from 576 and 512 death per 100,000 live births which translate to 33,000 women dying each year and 1 in 9 maternal deaths worldwide.

Dr. Filani applauded the state Governor Dr.Kayode Fayemi for his passion to ensure good health care service delivery, especially to the vulnerable people in the state.

He echoed that the training would help in the attitudinal change of some health workers which he said he was hopeful that the participants would have acquired skills needed to improve the process and outcome of pregnancy that would reduce pregnancy related complications.

Earlier in her welcome address, the board chairman of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency Chief Mrs Monisola Oloro represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Agency Pharmacist Olabisi Arogundade reiterated the purpose of the training as to equip and expose the community health extension workers to appropriate knowledge on childbirth, improve the skills of CHEWS in maternal and child health care services and to enable them acquire skills in early diagnosis and recognition of “at-risk” pregnancy women for referral.

She appreciated the initiative of Ekiti State government in preventing maternal and perinatal mortality which singled her out as one of the states playing the leading role in the reduction of maternal, neonatal and child mortality in Nigeria.

There was a goodwill message from the National Health Care Development Agency by the state coordinator Mr. Robert Fagbun who described the training as timely and appropriate.

Participants for training at the event were drawn from all the 16 local government areas of the state
