Police Arraign Octogenarian, Other For Giving False Information Against Lawyers
An Octogenarian, Akinola Oloruntoba and one Jimoh Makinde, have been arraigned before a Lagos High Court sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) over alleged conspiracy and making false information against two lawyers and three others.
The defendants offence according to the prosecutor, Barrister Morufu A. Animashaun, a legal Officer at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (ForceCID) Annex, Alagbon-Ikoyi, bordering on conspiracy and making false statement to the police.
At the resumed hearing, the prosecution counsel, Animashaun told the court that defendants was brought before on the order of court, after a bench warrant was issued bench against them.
Animashaun told court that the defendants and others who is at large conspired among themselves to commit Felony to wit: making false statement to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos
He informed the court that the defendants made a false petition to the Inspector General of Police, which was discovered to be false after through investigation. Adding that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) however directed that they should be prosecuted.
Among those that the defendants gave false information against were: Barrister Kola Sodiya and Barrister Rotimi Fasogbon; Amole Habeeb; Raji Alabi and Adeboye Toye.
The defendants offences according to the prosecutor are contrary to the provision Section 95 and 96 of the Criminal Law Ch.C17. Vol. 3, Law of Lagos State 2015 and punishable under Section 95 of same Law, 2015.
The defendants whoever pleaded not guilty to the six counts charges against to them.
Following their plea, their counsel, Chijioke Samuel Igwe, prayed the court orally to grant the defendants bail in the most liberal terms.
He particularly prayed the court to considered the aged of their first defendant, whom he said is 80 years of age.
The prosecutor, Barrister Animashaun told the court that he is not opposing the lawyer’s oral bail application
Moving in term of the bail application, Justice Adesanya therefore admitted them to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties he like k them to bail in the .
The judge ordered that the two sureties must be residents in Lagos and must bring evidence of tax payment. She further ordered that the residents of the sureties must verify by the registrar.
Justice Adesanya subsequently adjourned the matter to May 2 to 9, 2024 for trial.
