Kano Assembly Stops Ex-deputy Gov’s Impeachment Proceedings After Resignation

The Kano State House of Assembly has withdrawn impeachment proceedings against former Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, following his resignation from office.

The decision was announced during plenary on Tuesday after the House resumed from its Sallah recess.

Speaker Jibril Falgore presided over the session.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Shawai, the House formally set aside the impeachment process after reading a resignation letter submitted by Gwarzo.

The letter, dated March 27, 2026, indicated that the former deputy governor resigned voluntarily in line with Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Part of the letter read, “I, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, Deputy Governor of Kano State, hereby tender my voluntary resignation from office, effective 27 March 2026.”

Speaking with journalists, the Majority Leader of the House, Lawal Dala, said the withdrawal of the impeachment proceedings became necessary following Gwarzo’s exit from office.

He noted that any allegations against the former deputy governor would now be handled by relevant anti-corruption agencies.

“We are not the EFCC or ICPC; we discharge our responsibilities as a legislative body,” Dala said.

In a related development, a member representing Kiru Constituency notified the House of his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the African Democratic Congress.

The lawmaker said his decision, which took effect on March 29, followed consultations with constituents and was influenced by internal crises within the NNPP.

Meanwhile, the House also received the Local Government Audited Accounts for the year ended December 31, 2024.

Presenting the report, the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Tukur Muhammad Fagge, commended members for their commitment and support during the review process.

In another development, the Chairman of the Committee on Higher Education, Abdulhamid Abdul Minjibir, moved a motion for a bill seeking the establishment of Minjibir College of Education and Legal Studies.

Minjibir said the proposed institution would help expand access to tertiary education and support efforts to decongest the Kano metropolis.

In his welcome address after the four-week Ramadan break, Speaker Falgore congratulated the people of the state and the Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on the successful completion of Ramadan and Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

“On behalf of the entire Kano State House of Assembly, I extend our heartfelt felicitations to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, and the good people of Kano State on the successful completion of Ramadan fasting and the Eid-el-Fitr celebration,” he said.

He urged residents to sustain the values of unity, peaceful coexistence and discipline imbibed during the fasting period, describing them as critical to the state’s development.
