Arsenal Lead Race To Sign Fernandez In £35m Deal
Arsenal are leading the race to sign Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez, with the Nigerian defender attracting widespread interest ahead of a potential summer move valued at up to £35m.
Fernandez, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United, endured a slow start to life in Scotland, starting just one of the club’s opening 11 Scottish Premiership matches and missing six matchday squads during that period.
However, he has since established himself as a key figure under head coach Danny Röhl, emerging as one of the league’s most consistent defenders and being named in the PFA Team of the Season.
The 24-year-old has impressed at both ends of the pitch, scoring six goals while winning 69 per cent of his defensive duels, performances that have drawn attention from clubs across England and Europe.
According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal are currently at the front of the queue, closely monitoring the 6ft 5in centre-back as they consider reinforcements for their defensive line.
“Arsenal lead the domestic pursuit, with the Gunners closely monitoring the giant defender as a potential reinforcement for their backline,” TEAMtalk reported.
The north London club face strong competition, with several Premier League and European sides also tracking Fernandez’s progress.
“Chelsea have also shown keen interest, while West Ham United are actively linked and could make a concrete approach,” the report added.
“Everton complete a notable Premier League contingent keeping tabs on his progress.”
Interest extends beyond England, with Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen among the admirers, while Ajax, Feyenoord and Club Brugge are also monitoring the situation.
“In Europe, Bundesliga sides Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen have registered strong admiration, with some sources indicating they were among the earliest to show interest. Dortmund in particular are seen as strong contenders,” TEAMtalk stated.
Rangers are understood to be preparing for significant interest in the defender and are expected to demand a fee in the region of £25m to £35m, with Fernandez still having three years remaining on his contract.
“Rangers are braced for significant interest and are reportedly set to demand at least £25m, with some sources suggesting a higher valuation up to £35m, for the centre-back,” the report added.
Fernandez’s statistical output underlines his growing reputation, with an 87.6 per cent passing accuracy and a 68.8 per cent dribbling success rate highlighting his composure in possession.
Defensively, he has registered 229 contributions, including 105 recoveries and 149 clearances, while also winning over 72 per cent of his aerial duels.
Despite Arsenal’s interest, competition for places remains a consideration, with William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães currently established as the club’s first-choice centre-back pairing.
Options such as Cristian Mosquera and several full-backs capable of operating centrally further increase the depth available to manager Mikel Arteta.
As a result, Fernandez is likely to weigh his options carefully, particularly with regular playing time expected to be a key factor in determining his next move.
