FG Hails Elias’ Election To UN International Law Commission

The Federal Government has congratulated Nigerian international legal expert, Taoheed Elias, on his election into the United Nations International Law Commission during the commission’s 77th session held in Geneva.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government described the election as a recognition of Nigeria’s contributions to the development of international law and multilateral diplomacy.

According to the statement, Elias emerged successful in a competitive election conducted to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Kenya’s representative, Professor Phoebe Okowa. Candidates from Ghana and Botswana also contested the seat.

The government said Elias brings decades of experience in international legal affairs to the commission, having previously served as Registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals with the rank of United Nations Assistant Secretary-General.

The statement added that he had also held key positions, including Legal Adviser and Director at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Executive Secretary of the World Bank Administrative Tribunal, and Legal Adviser at the United Nations Compensation Commission.

The ministry noted that the International Law Commission, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1947, is responsible for the progressive development and codification of international law.

According to the statement, the commission handles issues relating to state responsibility, international agreements, immunity, dispute settlement, piracy and other global legal matters.

The Federal Government expressed confidence that Elias would deploy his expertise in advancing the commission’s work and promoting international cooperation and peaceful coexistence among nations.

“The Federal Government congratulates Dr Elias on this remarkable achievement and wishes him a successful tenure in the discharge of his responsibilities on the Commission,” the statement added.
