Cape Verde Hero Vozinha Gains Over 6m Followers In Under 24 hours After Spain Heroics

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the breakout stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after his stunning performance against Spain sparked an extraordinary surge in popularity on social media.

The 40-year-old shot-stopper had just over 50,000 followers on Instagram before Cape Verde’s historic tournament opener against the European champions on Monday. Less than 24 hours later, that number had skyrocketed to 6.3 million, turning the veteran goalkeeper into a global sensation.

Vozinha was the standout performer as tournament debutants Cape Verde held Spain to a shock 0-0 draw in Atlanta, securing the country’s first-ever World Cup point.

Facing relentless pressure from Luis de la Fuente’s side, the experienced keeper produced seven saves and frustrated some of the world’s biggest stars, including substitute Lamine Yamal.

His heroics earned him the Player of the Match award and left the goalkeeper in tears at the final whistle.

“He was overwhelmed with emotion,” Cape Verde coach Bubista said afterward. “He has struggled throughout all these years to be here on this stage. Those were tears of resilience.”

The remarkable rise to global fame caps an extraordinary football journey.

Born in Mindelo, Cape Verde, Vozinha only turned professional at the age of 25 with local club Batuque in 2007 — the same year Spain wonderkid Yamal was born. Over the next two decades, he carved out a career that took him across Portugal, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia, winning just one major trophy, the 2018-19 Cypriot Cup with AEL Limassol.

Despite spending much of his club career away from the spotlight, the goalkeeper has been a pillar of the Cape Verde national team since 2012 and was instrumental in their qualification for a maiden World Cup appearance.

Before the tournament, he described the competition as “the most important moment of our lives.” Against Spain, that dream became reality.

“I have worked my whole life for this moment,” Vozinha said after being named man of the match.

“I’m 40 years old. I thought about leaving football, but I continued because of this dream. This award is for all my teammates because without them nothing would be possible.”

The emotional scenes after the final whistle were also deeply personal. Vozinha revealed that he thought about his late grandparents, who raised him, and his mother, who was unable to travel to the United States.

“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents and they are no longer here,” he said. “They were everything to me. I also cried because my mum couldn’t be here because of visa issues. I would have loved for her to witness this.”

His remarkable display quickly captured the imagination of fans worldwide, with Brazilian broadcaster CazéTV urging viewers to follow him on Instagram. The response was immediate, as his follower count exploded from around 50,000 before kick-off to 6.3 million by the time of publication.

Now one of the faces of the tournament, Vozinha will hope his fairytale story continues when Cape Verde return to action against Uruguay on Sunday in Miami.

After years spent as a football journeyman, the veteran goalkeeper has become one of the most beloved figures of the World Cup — and his incredible journey is far from over.
