My Mum Wanted Me With Rihanna, Says A$AP Rocky

American rapper, A$AP Rocky, has revealed that his mother, Renee Black, always believed he would end up with global music star, Rihanna, long before their friendship blossomed into romance.

Rocky disclosed this in a recent interview with the New York Times Popcast which was shared on Thursday.

He noted that his mother repeatedly encouraged him to pursue a relationship with the Barbadian singer, even when he insisted they were only friends.

According to the rapper, he initially brushed off her comments, convinced that Rihanna had no romantic interest in him at the time.

“My mother used to say I know you like this girl that you are with right now (I am not going to say any names), but I want you with Riri. I used to be like ‘mum, why do you keep saying that? That girl does not even want me like that. Be cool, she is just my friend’,” he said.

However, the rapper admitted that his mother’s instincts eventually proved right, noting that the timing of their relationship worked perfectly in their favour.

“Mothers know best and I am thankful that she was put in my life at that time because I think anytime prior to that, I do not think I was ready for something like that.”

Rocky and Rihanna’s relationship began as a longtime friendship before turning romantic in late 2020.

The celebrity couple welcomed their first child in May 2022, followed by their second son, Riot Rose, in August 2023.

In September 2025, they welcomed their third child, Rocki Irish Mayers.
