‘Cancellation Of Intel Contract Counter Productive’
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has expressed worry over the recent cancellation of Intels Nigeria Limited Vessel Pilotage Service by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), saying it could be counter productive.
This was contained in a statement signed by the President General of Maritime workers, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju and made available to newsmen on Wednesday.
He said, “ As organized labour, our utmost concern is the job security and welfare of our members in Inter Nigeria Limited. We are aware that Intels Nigeria Limited has under its employment, over 5000 direct employees and over 6000 indirect employees bringing the number of employees to over 11,000. Most of these employees are Nigerians with families and responsibilities.”
Adeyanju added that the union is worried that if the issue is not resolved amicably, their jobs could be on the line, saying the socio-economic implications of most of them losing their jobs in a volatile area like Rivers State can be better imagined that experienced.
“As a patriotic Trade Union in the country, we are also disturbed about the kind of message this contract cancellation will send to investors locally and internationally. We want to advice that the Federal Government should avoid anything that will send wrong signals to investors that Nigeria’s environment is not safe and conducive for business.
“Consequently, we appeal to the Federal Government through the NPA, to sit down at a round table with Intels Nigeria Limited to amicably resolve whatever misunderstanding that led to the cancellation of the contract to put to rest, the restiveness in the sector”, he concluded.
