Court Convicts Malaysian-Chinese Man For Drug Trafficking
A 45 year-old Malaysian-Chinese, Liang Tak You, has been convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment, for unlawful importation of a drug substance called Loud, by a Federal High Court Lagos.
You born as Malaysian but became a Chinese by naturalization, was convicted and sentenced by Justice Ibrahim Ahmad Kala, after he as arraigned before the court by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), today.
The convicted foreigner, according to the prosecutor, Barrister Abu Ibrahim, a Commander of Narcotics, informed the court that he was arrested with the prohibited drug weighing 26.10 Kilogrames, concealed in two suit cases, upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport Ikeja Lagos, on July 25, 2025.
He told the court that the offences committed by the defendant, contravened 11 (a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under the same Act.
The defendant, admitted committing the offence, and pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
Following his guilty plea, the prosecutor, who is the head of legal department of the MMIA command of the NDLEA, urged the court to convict and sentence him according to his plea coupled with the exhibits tendered.
Among the exhibits tendered by the prosecutor includes: his confessional statement (both in Chinese and English) bulk of the drugs, his international passport, the sum of $153 USD and others.
However, lawyer to the defendant, Chief Lilian Omotunde, pleaded with the court to be lenient in sentencing her client, saying that his client is ‘vulnerable’, and ‘gullible’. Adding that her client is driver.
She urged the court to give her client a fine option in lieu of custodian sentence.
Sentencing the defendant, Justice Kala sentenced him to two years imprisonment. But ordered to pay a fine option of N1 million.
The judge also ordered that the bulk of drug, sum of $153 USD and traveling documents except international passport, be forfeited to the federal government of Nigeria, for destruction if there was no appeal against the judgment.
Charge Against the convict reads: “that you Liang Tak You Male, Adult, a Malaysian-Chinese on or about the 25th July 2025 during the inward clearance of passengers aboard Emirates Airlines flight from Bangkok, Thailand via Dubai United Arab Emirates to Lagos at the E-Arrival Hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja-Lagos without lawful authority imported 26.10 Kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a Narcotic Drug similar to Cocaine, LSD, Heroin and you thereby committed an act which Is an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11 (a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”
