Court Jails Edo-born Afro Beat Singer For Dealing In Indian Hemp
An Edo State-born upcoming afro beat musician, Godspower George Osahenrunmwen, has been convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment, by a Federal High Court, Lagos, for unlawful dealing in indian hemp.
Godspower also known as Joshua Igiehon, by his admirers, was given the jail terms by Justice Ahmed Ibrahim Kala, after pleaded guilty to a count charge slammed on him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Thursday.
The prosecutor, Barrister Abu Ibrahim, had told the court that the convict was arrested on October 30, 2025, at No. 2 Freedom Way, Lekki, Lagos State, where he was unlawfully dealing in  77.20 kilograms of the prohibited substance.
 
Based on the prosecutor’s review of fact, exhibits tendered and the indian hemp dealer’s guilty plea, the court convict him as charged.
But his lawyer, Chief Benson Ndakara leading two other lawyers, in his allocutor, pleaded with the court to be merciful with his client.
He prayed the court to consider the early guilty plea of his client as a sign of remorsefulness, adding that the convict had promised not to engage in illegal act any more.
Before passing the sentence, Justice Kala asked from both the prosecutor and the defence team of the street value of the drug, which Chief Ndakara gave as N2 million locally.
In passing the judgment, Justice Kala sentenced the convict to three years imprisonment. He however ordered the convict to pay the sum of N2 million as an option of fine in lieu of the jail terms.
In addition to the fine option, the judge also ordered the convict to perform 90 days community service. While also ordered that the two phones recovered from the convict be forfeited to the federal government of Nigeria.
The charge against the convicted upcoming singer reads: that you, Godspower George Osahenrunmwen a.k.a. Joshua Igiehon Male, Adult on or about the 30th October 2025 at the Price Water Gardens No. 2 Freedom Way, Lekki, Lagos State without lawful authority dealt in 77.20 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a Narcotic Drug similar to Cocaine, LSD, Heroin and you thereby committed an act which is an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11 (c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”
