In A Time Of Youth And Gender Conversations, ‘Girls Hostel’ Reopens Boarding School Stories
In a time when conversations around youth wellbeing, education, and gender dynamics are gaining urgency in Nigeria, a new YouTube series is revisiting a familiar but often underexplored formative space: the boarding school hostel.
Premiering on February 13, Girls Hostel blends nostalgia with subtle suspense, reopening stories many Nigerians recognize from their school years—shared rooms, intense friendships, social hierarchies, and the unspoken rules that shaped identity and character.
Created and produced by Bolu Essien and Emmanuel Essien under Evolving Light Studios, and directed by Olubunmi Akingbola, the series continues the studio’s focus on culturally grounded, youth-driven storytelling. The producers are known for projects such as Netflix’s Becoming Abi and the viral comedy series Salon 001, positioning them among a new wave of African creators shaping digital-first narratives.
At its core, Girls Hostel portrays everyday life in a girls’ boarding school—the gossip, rivalries, humour, and emotional bonds formed in close quarters. As the story unfolds, routine school life begins to fracture, revealing hidden tensions, power dynamics, and unexplained events that challenge trust and loyalty among the girls.
The ensemble cast includes Bolu Essien, Onyinye Odokoro, Aderonke Adepoju, Eva Ibiam, Darasimi Ogbetah, Inem King, Miriam Peters, Remi Surutu, and Toyin Alausa, among others, bringing emotional depth and authenticity to the portrayal of adolescent friendships and social structures.
Beyond entertainment, the series reflects the growing role of digital platforms in African storytelling, where youth-focused narratives are increasingly driving cultural conversations outside traditional television.
Girls Hostel premieres exclusively on YouTube via BoluEssienTV on February 13.
For many Nigerians, boarding school was a rite of passage. For others, it was a silent ecosystem of power, hierarchy, and secrets. Girls Hostel revisits that world with fresh eyes.
