Gridlock Grounds Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Heavy traffic paralysed a section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday morning, with gridlock stretching from Longbridge to Magboro and beyond.

The congestion, which began around 7:30am, was reportedly triggered by a fuel tanker that obstructed the road near the Magboro bridge.

A user on X, Emperor Ridwan Abdyekeen, tagged the FRSC in a post, saying the truck had been causing “a hell of gridlock since 7:30am.”

Traffic heading outbound Lagos was the worst hit.

Another user reported that vehicles around Aseese were “close to a stand still,” adding that “the impediment at Magboro bridge has been evacuated” but that slow movement persisted towards Ibafo.

Inbound Lagos was also affected.

The same user noted that “vehicle who passed one way are disrupting free flow of traffic towards Lagos.”

A traffic update posted on X said the Nigeria Traffic Radio Command, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Papa Oscar Response Team and the Fire Service were “on ground facilitating the removal of the accidental tanker,” with traffic to “be redirect to normal lane of the expressway.”

Motorists were advised “to exercise patience on the road.”

The exact cause of the obstruction, whether a breakdown or a collision, could not be independently confirmed.

The inbound Lagos lane was largely free, while the outbound lane towards Mowe and Ibadan remained at very slow movement.

The precise location where the traffic stopped could not be determined.
