Traditional rulers across the Ikorodu Division of Lagos State on Thursday pledged their support for President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and all the party’s candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The monarchs, led by the Paramount Ruler of Ikorodu Division and the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, announced their stance during a meeting between Dr. Hamzat and the Obas of Ikorodu Division, held at the Palace in Ikorodu.
The gathering was attended by Lagos Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu; his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; APC deputy gubernatorial candidate, Princess Damilola Sonayon-James; Lagos APC chairman, Pastor Cornelious Ojelabi; as well as traditional rulers, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), political leaders, and public office holders from Ikorodu Division.
The Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Shotobi, along with other traditional rulers and political leaders, warmly received the delegation and offered their royal blessings.
Oba Shotobi expressed confidence that Ikorodu residents will vote massively for President Tinubu and Hamzat because they trust in their leadership capabilities.
He highlighted the role of traditional rulers during elections and assured Governor Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Hamzat that the monarchs—who, according to him, are staunch APC supporters—will unite in support of President Tinubu, Hamzat, and all APC candidates.
Also speaking, the Ranodu of Imota, Oba Ajibade Bakare-Agoro, said that: “Hamzat is the only deputy who didn’t disturb his governor. He has a good relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu, and that relationship earned him the APC candidacy. He is enjoying the reward of his father. Ikorodu will support him because Ikorodu is always in the progressive camp.”
In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu thanked the traditional rulers and the political leaders for their backing of the ruling party and the current administration, urging the people of Ikorodu to re-elect President Tinubu and also vote for his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, as the next Governor of Lagos State.
He emphasised that the re-election of President Tinubu is vital for Lagos and Nigeria’s ongoing development, citing his notable achievements and contributions across the country.
“Development has transformed Lagos. We can see what the President has done in Lagos State and elsewhere in Nigeria. He deserves to be re-elected because of his performance. So, let us campaign and work towards President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
“I want to urge the people of Ikorodu to deliver 250,000 votes as promised for President Tinubu in the 2027 election. Mobilise votes for President Tinubu and all APC candidates. I will work for the victory of Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as my successor. Let us get him elected as the next governor of Lagos State.”
Dr. Hamzat, the APC governorship candidate, encouraged traditional rulers, political leaders, party members, and residents of Ikorodu to come out in large numbers to exercise their civic responsibilities and vote for all APC candidates.
He described the re-election of President Tinubu as crucial to maintaining the current reforms and development agenda. He praised the President’s courage, experience, and dedication to national progress during his first term.
The Deputy Governor also called on the people of Ikorodu to vote for him and other APC candidates during the 2027 elections, emphasising that the ruling party’s good governance and development efforts should be continued.
Dr. Hamzat reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Ikorodu Division, assuring the traditional rulers and the party leaders that the concerns and requests raised during the meeting would be given the attention they deserve.
He stated: “Lagos is developing, and the 2027 general election is important. We must come out and support President Tinubu with our votes. I believe achieving 250,000 votes for APC in Ikorodu is possible. We should vote in large numbers. We must support our President.
“We cannot afford to experiment with Lagos because it is very important to Nigeria. Let us support the ruling party so that Lagos can keep progressing. Ikorodu is included in our development plans. Ikorodu is important to us.”
Senator Tokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, affirmed that Dr. Hamzat’s competence and leadership are unquestionable.
Hon. Babajimi Benson, representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, assured President Tinubu and Hamzat of 250,000 votes, noting that over 1,000 CDAs in Ikorodu would vote along progressive lines for all APC candidates.
Other traditional rulers and political leaders at the event expressed confidence that Dr. Hamzat’s emergence as Governor Sanwo-Olu’s successor would ensure continuity in growth, development, stability, and progress across Ikorodu Division and Lagos State.
