Lagos LG Poll: LASIEC Officials Lament Low Turnout In Ikosi-Isheri LCDA
Officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission have expressed concern over the low voter turnout recorded across several polling units in the Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area during Saturday’s local government elections.
Despite early deployment of electoral materials and staff in some locations, most polling units witnessed sparse attendance hours after voting commenced.
At Polling Unit 036, voting began on schedule with 56 voters expected.
However, by mid-morning, only a few had turned up.
“We’ve been here since 8 a.m. but not many people have shown up,” one official told reporters.
At Polling Unit 020, Ward 2 in Ikosi-Isheri, 94 voters were expected, but only two had come out to vote as of the time of reporting.
“So far, it’s been peaceful and no disturbances,” an official noted, though he admitted the turnout was discouraging.
Even more stark was the situation at Polling Unit 048, Ward C, where 1,273 voters were registered. As of 11 a.m., only 20 had cast their votes.
Similarly, at Polling Unit 049, also in Ward C, just seven of the 1,029 expected voters had participated by late morning. Electoral officials there said they had been stationed at the unit since 8 a.m., waiting for voters who had yet to arrive.
The local government polls are being held across Lagos State’s 20 constitutionally recognized Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
The elections aim to fill chairmanship and councillorship positions, which play a critical role in grassroots governance and community development.
However, apathy, poor voter education, and logistical challenges continue to affect participation in local elections, an issue LASIEC has acknowledged and promised to address in future exercises.
Voting continued in many parts of Ikosi-Isheri as of press time.
