Man Sentenced To Death Over Armed Robbery In Osun
44-year-old Rafiu Saheed was sentenced to death Thursday by an Osun State High Court for armed Robbery.
The presiding judge, Justice Kudirat Akano while delivering her verdict in Ede said that the prosecuting counsel has proved his case beyond doubt and hereby found Saheed guilty of the two count charges preferred against him.
The Convict was arraigned in the Court on 30th of November, 2017 on two counts charges of attempted murder and armed robbery contrary to sections 6(b) and 1 (2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms section 320 Criminal Code Law, Cap 34, Laws of Osun State, 2002 and Section 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 respectively.
Convict pleaded not guilty, to the two counts charges of attempted murder and armed robbery preferred against him then.
Prosecution Counsel from the Ministry of Justice Barrister Bankole Awoyemi during prosecution told the court that the convict sometimes on 30th July, 2012, contracted Mr. Olaniyi Olayinka a motorcycle operator to take him to his brother’s house at Ipetumodu from Ile-Ife.
He explained that on getting to Ipetumodu, they did not meet the (convict) brother.
He went further to state that the (Convict) then informed the motorcyclist Olaniyi Olayinka to take him back to Ile-Ife and on their way back to Ife, he took out a knife and slit the throat of the motorcyclist.
The Convict then took away the motorcycle of Olaniyi Olayinka thinking that he was dead.
However, Olaniyi Olayinka survived the attack and reported the incident to the nearest police station which led to the arrest of Saheed with the motorcycle of Olaniyi in his possession.
Sgt. Okeniyi Segun a police officer attached to Ipetumodu Police Division testified on how the accused was arrested at Moore police Station and his subsequent transfer to the Ipetumodu Police Division.
The prosecutor provided evidences and witnesses to corroborate his submissions.
Counsel to the convict Barr. Julie Olorunfemi of Legal Aid Council pleaded to the court to temper Justice with mercy.
Delivering judgement, Justice Kudirat Akano sentenced Saheed to 14 years in Nigeria Correctional Custody on attempted mother and death for armed robbery.
