Naval Chief Warns Officers Against Colluding With Oil Thieves

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, on Monday underscored the imperative for all Navy personnel to “maintain the highest standard of discipline and professionalism in their operations.”

Speaking in Warri, Delta State, during his inaugural familiarisation visit to the Nigerian Navy Ship NNS-Delta, the CNS reminded officers and ratings that naval operations are “extremely critical to the nation.”

He said, “We all know the nation depends on our oil resources. And where are these resources? Mainly within our waters. We are the custodians of that maritime environment.

“A lot is expected from us. Let me be clear — I will not tolerate anyone colluding with crude oil thieves. If you intend to do that, please relinquish your uniform and join them openly. But be assured, if you join them, we will still apprehend you. It’s either you ship in, or you shape out.

“I reiterate the need for professionalism in all our conduct. There is no room for indiscipline. I expect everyone to be professional in all activities.”

Earlier, the CNS stated that his visit aimed to familiarise himself with personnel “to gain first-hand information and better understand the ground realities, which will aid informed decisions.”

He invited officers and ratings to openly voice any concerns, especially regarding operations and welfare.

“One of my highest priorities is your welfare. I am aware of the severe accommodation shortage, which is a key reason for my visit — to explore possibilities for new housing,” he said.

“I will ask only for your discipline, loyalty, and commitment to advancing this Navy. It is our Navy collectively — not mine alone, but all of ours.”

The CNS added, “Aligned with Nigerian Navy core values of professionalism, integrity, and teamwork, hard work will be recognised, but indiscipline will be sternly punished.”

Answering journalists after the visit, he stressed the continued priority of securing Nigeria’s maritime domain.

“We are doing all within our power to maintain peace in our maritime environment, so legitimate commerce can thrive. This benefits the nation through increased revenue.”

He highlighted the importance of collaboration with host communities, saying, “Security challenges require a whole-of-society approach. Our host communities are essential partners — they know the terrain and the people, so intelligence from them is invaluable. This symbiotic relationship benefits us all.”
