 Oyo Doctors Call-off Strike

Doctors in Oyo State on Tuesday said they have called off the strike they embarked on to compel the state government to reverse its decision to transfer resident doctors in the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital to the ministry.

According to the doctors under the auspices of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), the decision to call off the strike was taken at an emergency held last Friday.

The NMA state chairman, Dr. Omolola Atalabi-Oladele and the secretary, Dr. Abimbola Sojimi in a statement issued in Ibadan made available to journalists said the suspension of the strike took effect from Tuesday, 30th January, 2018.

He disclosed that there had been extensive deliberations and negotiations with the state government and the management of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital over the past weeks aimed at resolving the industrial crisis in the institution.

He commended the doctors for their courage, steadfastness and perseverance during the trying period.

The union had in a statement issued on the redeployment of doctors asked the LAUTECH management to reverse the decision of transferring resident doctors to the ministry or face the wrath of the members.

According to them, the action is an, “aberration and deliberate plan to rob the good people of Oyo State of specialised healthcare”.

The Oyo NMA and Lautech Ogbomosho ARD described the move as “Bastardisation of Residency Training” and “A taboo that must never be allowed.”

“The transfer “under whatever guise is seen as an attempt to completely eliminate residency training in Lautech Ogbomosho,”.

Emphasizing that the redeployment,” looks like taking ten steps backward in an enlightened society such as ours,” the unions called on the management to reverse the moves and all other provocative decisions reached within 21 days.
