A man, who claims to be a native of Anambra State, was, Wednesday, rescued by Police from being lynched by a mob, at Itam Timber Market, in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, where he was found with a carton containing his son’s corpse.

It was gathered that inquisitive traders got suspicious and raised the alarm when the man whose name could not be ascertained at press time headed towards the market waste receptacle carrying a carton on his head.

An eyewitness who spoke to newsmen on the condition of anonymity said the man was accompanied by two other male children (minors) when the mob at the market accosted him.

The eyewitness narrated, “Some angry market men held the man, brought down the carton on his head and discovered it contained the lifeless body of a child (boy) naked but neatly wrapped with torn clothes.”

In a viral video the man was seen engaging those who confronted him in a fight as they forced him to remove the corpse from the carton, labelling him a ritualist, before the police arrived the scene.

But responding to the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom Command, Timfon John, said investigation revealed the man didn’t kill his son, even as she said investigation was still ongoing.
