Senate To Hold North West Constitution Review Hearing July 18
The Senate has rescheduled the zonal public hearing for the North West geo-political zone on the constitution review exercise to July 18 and 19.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Constitution Review.
The North West hearing, originally slated to hold in Kano on July 4 and 5, was suspended out of respect for the late elder statesman, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who was buried in Madina, Saudi Arabia on June 30.
The Senate had observed a mourning period for the deceased, a revered figure in Kano State and beyond.
Speaking during plenary, Senator Barau urged lawmakers representing the 21 senatorial districts in the North West to mobilize their constituents to actively participate in the public hearing.
He emphasized that the forum is a crucial opportunity for Nigerians to contribute to shaping constitutional reforms.
“The participation of citizens in this review process is vital to ensure that the constitution reflects the will and aspirations of the people,” Barau said.
He also called on individuals, civil society groups, and other stakeholders in the zone to submit memoranda outlining their proposals for constitutional amendments.
The Senate had earlier conducted similar public hearings in the five other geo-political zones of the country on the originally scheduled dates of July 4 and 5.
