Senate Okays DIG Ringim, Three Others As PSC Members
The Senate yesterday approved the nomination of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Uba Ringim (retd.) and three others for appointment as members of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Other nominees approved as members of the PSC are: Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (retd.), Abdulfatah Mohammed, and Justice Christine Ladi Dabup (retd.).
The resolution of the Red Chamber followed its consideration and adoption of the report of its Committee on Police Affairs that screened the nominees during plenary.
In a letter to the Senate in November last year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had called for the confirmation of the nominees for appointment.
The letter reads: “In accordance with the provisions of Section 154(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointments of the under-listed four (4) nominees as members of the Police Service Commission.
“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominees in the usual expeditious manner, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration and personal regards.”
Also, the Senate yesterday approved President Tinubu’s nominees for appointment as Chairman and members of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).
The resolution of the Senate followed its consideration and adoption of the recommendation of the Committee on Establishment and Public Service that screened the nominees.
The report was presented by Committee Chairman Fasuyi Oluwole (APC, Ekiti North) during plenary.
The Senate confirmed Dr. Saviour Enyiekere (Southsouth) for appointment as the chairman of the NASC for a five-year renewable term upon appointment.
The commissioners-designate representing the Northwest are: Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi and Yusuf A. Yusuf, while those representing the Northeast are: Aminu Ibrahim Malle and Alhaji Lawan Maina Mahmud.
The NASC commissioners to represent the Northcentral are: Mark Hanmation Tersoo and Salihu Umar Agboola Balogun, while Taiwo Olukemi Oluga and Afeez Ipeza-Balogun would represent the Southwest.
While the nomination of Festus Ifesinachi Odii to represent the Southeast was confirmed, that of Dr. Nnanna Uzor Kalu was stood down due to a petition to the Senate by the current occupant of the slot from Imo State who claimed that his tenure had not elapsed.
Mr. Patrick A. Giwa and Mrs. Mary Ekpenyong were cleared to represent the Southsouth in the commission.
Also yesterday, President Tinubu requested the Senate to screen and confirm six nominees for appointment as board members of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).
The request was contained in a letter read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
President Tinubu said the nominations were in accordance with Section 10, Subsection 1 of the AMCON Establishment Act, 2019 (as amended).
The nominees are: Dr. Bala Bello, as chairman of the board; Yusuf Tegina, non-executive director (Northcentral); Adeyemo Adeoye, non-executive director (Southwest).
