Striking Unions Set To Embark On Nationwide Protest
Striking university worker will on Thursday embarks on a nationwide protest to express their misgivings over federal government refusal to resolve the issues surrounding their demand.
The workers include the Senior Staffs Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non- Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The Acting Chairman, Senior Staffs Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) Chapter, Mr. Gbenga Adenaya, said told journalists that all the members of the Joint Actions Committee, (JAC) are coming together massively on Thursday to protest about their withholding allowances by the federal government.
He said, “Since the strike started last year December, the government has ignored the union by not taking any step to address the demands of the striking workers”.
Adenaya added that the strike will continue until the federal government addresses their demand including their payment of backlog allowances.
Reacting to statements credited to Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige urging the striking unions to consider the plight of the students and return to work while the government addresses their demands Adenaya said, “the Minister cannot tell the union to resume work, only the leaders of JAC can say so”.
