Surety Docked Over Failure To Produce Suspect
For his failure to produce a suspect, Thomas Oghenede, was on Friday, arraigned at an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court.
Oghenede, 57, who is facing a two-count charge of perversion of justice and fraud pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on September 8, 2017, around 4:00 pm at the office of the Area Commander, Moore Police station, Ile-Ife.
Osanyintuyi said that the accused conspired to commit felony with intent to pervert justice by standing surety for one Uche Portia & Thomas God’s Power with a recognizance bond to forfeit N5 million.
He added that his suretyship caused the accused to escape in a case of obtaining money under false pretence by failing to produce them for trial.
According to him, the offence contravened sections 126, 127 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Ben Adirieje, pleaded for the bail of the accused in most liberal terms with the promise that his client would not jump bail.
Magistrate Risikat Olayemi granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety each in like sum.
Olayemi added that the surety should swear to affidavit of means, be a land owner within the court jurisdiction, address to be verified by the court as well as produce two recent passport photographs. She thereafter adjourned the case to Nov 11, for hearing.
