Trade Dispute Resolution: Economic Expert/Activist Advocates Dialogue Against Confrontational Tactics
An economic expert and trade unionist, Mr Samson Olutayo Olorunda as emphasised the need for trade unions to engage in pragmatic, constructive dialogue rather than resorting to confrontational and distructive measures.
Recounting his days as forefront activist as electricity worker and his experience with police at Alagbon in those days, Olorunda stated that during agitation while standing firm in advocating for better pay and working conditions, they also recognized the importance of preserving public assets and maintaining order.
His words: “It is pertinent to reflect on my involvement in unionism during my undergraduate days at Unilag and as a worker in the public electricity sector in Nigeria.
“During my undergraduate days, student activism was characterized by a sense of decorum and patriotism. In response to a tragic incident at the university, students protested peacefully, demonstrating their grievances without resorting to violence.
“Similarly, in my tenure as a worker and a union leader in the public electricity sector, our approach to unionism emphasized dialogue and constructive engagement. While we stood firm in advocating for better pay and working conditions, we also recognized the importance of preserving public assets and maintaining order.
Reacting to the recent face off between labour and government, the activist maintained that at the end of the day, the issues was still referred to round table talk for resolution through dialogue but lamented the effect the strike might have caused individual and the nation as a whole.
“Historically, two contrasting approaches existed: one advocating for cautious, measured actions, and the other endorsing aggressive, sometimes destructive tactics as a means to an end. Recent shutdowns of essential services, such as airports and hospitals, highlighted this division. However, it became evident that the initial enthusiasm for aggressive action lacked foresight and undermined public support.
“Critics rightfully pointed out the imprudence of such approaches, emphasizing the need for unions to engage in pragmatic, constructive dialogue rather than resorting to confrontational measures. The public, a well-informed segment of society, voiced their disapproval, urging unions to reconsider their stance.
“In hindsight, it is clear that the voice of reason prevailed. The swift reversal of the strike and suspension of destructive actions demonstrated responsiveness to public sentiment. This shift not only prevented further harm to the economy but also preserved the reputation of the labor movement.
“Furthermore, this episode serves as a cautionary tale for future actions. By adopting a more nuanced and strategic approach, unions can effectively advocate for their members while garnering broader public support.
“The demand for the reversal of the electricity tariff hike, once prominent, now seems overshadowed amidst the chaos. Had the union embraced a more pragmatic stance earlier, tangible progress could have been made on this front” he contended.
