WAEC Approves Additional Diet For Private Candidates
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has given approval for the national offices to commence the conduct of one additional diet each year of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates with effect from January/February, 2018.
This was disclosed at press conference addressed in Lagos on Thursday by the Registrar to the Council, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae.
According to him, with growing concern among the stakeholders over what they perceive as discrimination or denial of equal opportunity against private candidates, there has been a wave of agitation, criticism and appeal across the sub-region for the Council to find a way of ameliorating the agony of the private candidates, who desire another attempt at WASSCE.
Uwadiae continued: “This situation is often cited as being responsible for the level of desperation sometimes exhibited by the perpetrators of malpractice at the private candidates’ examination centres”.
The WEAC boss added that the conduct of the additional diet may not take off in all the member countries immediately and simultaneously.
” I want to assure stakeholders in Nigeria that the National office here indicated the willingness and readiness to blaze the trail by making the examination available to Nigerians in 2018. Details of the scheduled dates, available subjects, location of centres will be provided by the Council”, he said.
Uwadiae also informed newsmen that government of Liberia has phased out Senior High School Certificate Examination and fully adopt WASSCE.
He also disclosed that Mr. Jonathan Mbaakaa was elected as Vice Chairman of Council for the 2017/2018 academic year.
