Woman Throws 12-Day Old Baby Into Latrine In Ogun
The residents of Ilaro town, Ogun State were on Monday thrown into a state of confusion when a 21-years old lady identified as Amudalat Taiwo threw her 12-day old baby into the latrine.
She said she took the decision due to her inability to continue to provide for the infant.
It was learnt that the incident, which occurred at her residence located along Isheri Street of Ilaro, in Yewa South Local Government area of the state.
According to the residents, Amudalat’s husband, identified as Taiwo Owolabi had since the delivery of the child, deserted her for his other wife who also bore him five children.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in Ogun State command, Abimbola Oyeyemi who confirmed the incident to journalists in Abeokuta said police have arrested Amudalat for her action.
Oyeyemi explained that her arrest followed a complaint lodged with the police by Amudalat’s landlord, one Oshunshina Olawale that one of his tenants heard the crying of a baby inside the pit toilet when she visited.
“On the strength of the complaint, the DPO Ilaro Division CSP Opebiyi Sunday led detectives to the scene where the latrine was broken and the baby was rescued. On investigation it was discovered that the baby was given birth to by the suspect who was promptly arrested.”
PPRO further explained that upon interrogation, Amudalat confessed to committing the crime, “claiming that she is an orphan married to one Taiwo Owolabi who has already married to another woman and have five children.
“She stated further that the husband is not taking care of her and the baby and since she has no means of catering for the newly born baby, she decided to do away with her”.
Oyeyemi, who disclosed the baby is presently in a stable condition at Stella Obansanjo motherless baby home in Abeokuta, further disclosed that the father of Amudalat’s baby, Owolabi has been arrested “for failure to provide necessary needs for the mother and the child”.
He also said that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered that the case be transferred to Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department on for further investigation and possible prosecution of the suspects.
