I was at the Anderson's in Maumee last night and picked up what might just be the most delicious beer I've ever tasted. And that's saying something!
Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron is named after the wood it's aged on, from the Palo Santo tree ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulnesia_sarmientoi ), a very close "relative" to the tree from which Frankincense is derived.
I'm usually a lover of hoppy brews. I love a beer so hoppy it'll clear your sinuses, but this is NOT that kind of beer. It's rich, smooth, has a big mouth feel, a chocolatey smooth head on it, and it's just absolutely fantastic. It's VERY high alcohol, but at 12% ABV, it doesn't have much of an alcohol flavor.
Dogfish head spent hundreds of thousands of dollars building the largest wooden secondary fermenters in America since the age of prohibition. The beer is aged in these hand-built, non-pitched (no special lining) vats made of the Palo Santo. The flavors imparted by the wood are subtle, but unmistakable. This beer is huge, rich, and oh, so smooth!!!
Also of note, the 4-pack came with a DVD chronicling the story of how it came to be, how the wood was found, used, and some great insight into my favorite brewery!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
